I am having a engine rebuild and have taken loads of pics.

I thought I would start a thread and share my pics and progress through this.

All the work is getting done at Custom exotics, but though It would start stripping what I could off the engine at home in the garage.

I have never done this before so It felt a bit daunting, but after a while I was enjoying It and was pleased I started stripping it myself ( felt I was learning more about my engine by doing this)

I have managed to remove the drive belts, radiator, AC radiator, PS pump, AC compressor, alternator. All the intercooler pipes removed along with the inlet pipes to the turbos, some were a right pain. All the electrical connections on the top removed and the ones round the side I could see as well. I found the heater matrix pipes were bloody hard to disconnect. I disconnected some boost hoses, but reckon there are a few more I have forgotten lol. I have been using the guides for engine removal from here and found them very helpful.

Looking at the amount of wires and hoses there are in the engine bay is scary, but I hope to simplify the bay a lot and make it look a lot less cluttered along with a bit of bling. If you ever seen DUBSPEC engine bay from the aussie forum then you know what I mean. I am aiming for something like that.

More stripping later this week, glad I'm labeling and taken loads of pics.

Here are a couple of pics of the car as it looks now down at Custom Exotics.

Thanks,

Ant

I managed to get more done on the car this friday. I got the remaining items removed and disconnected. Brett at Custom exotics helped me with the final little bits like the cross member and engine mounts.

We was then ready to lift the engine out. I gotta say that it came out easy than I expected. There were only a few things still connected that I had missed. That being the oil cooler lines to the engine and the big old earth connection by the battery. Other than that It came out relatively easy.

I was pleased with how it went as this is the first engine pull I have done and was expecting to have missed loads of stuff, instead had managed to get most of the stuff removed and disconnected.

I'm now looking forward to stripping the engine ready for the rebuild and hopefully learn a bit more :)

Still can't believe how many wires and vacuum hoses there are in the engine bay that make it look messy and untidy.

Well I took yet more pics :D

just curious as to why you have removed the front bumper and lights?

The bumper needs a re spray due to very high speed bumps I came in contact with ;) Also I'm replacing the light adjuster cogs on the lights so needed to remove them as well

can i just say, i think your zed is gorgous

Agreed!

Looking forward to seeing this as it goes along :)

Some more work has been done over the last week.

Got the plenum off, as well as the tubs and both the heads. Couldn't believe the difference in size of the standard tubs compared to the GT28r's. The cylinder walls look good with no marks, so was pleased with that.

I will be back down there this friday and monday to strip a bit more ready for it to be cleaned.

I'm still enjoying the work I have done and learning a little each day.

More pics, hope you enjoy.

Thanks,

Ant

Now that, my friend, is a labour of love. I hope everything turns out OK for you.

Personally, I couldn't even imagine undertaking something like this.

And I agree, your car looks the muts nuts.

All the best with this bud, I hope to be able to do this to mine in the near future as well but am currently without the facilities :(

Spent another couple of days stripping the engine. The oil pump was a right pain to remove, never ever want to try and do that again. Took me half a day to remove with the help of Scott at custom exotics. Managed to get it completely stripped in the end and started cleaning it getting all the dirt and grease off. Got some of the smaller parts cleaned too, all ready to be sprayed, yet to decide on a colour.

Should be able to get down there again on monday to do yet more cleaning :D

Some more pics...

Cheers,

Ant

The EGR has already been removed by previous owner. I will be doing a plenum bypass. Not sure about the aircon, think I will miss it in the summer. I will have a think about that :D

I went and done more work on the car on Monday. I decided to have a go at fitting the HICAS elimination bar. Halfway through I got side tracked and ended up in the engine bay lol. I had a look at the EFI loom and disconnected more connectors and took more pics and labeled more things. I also removed the oil cooler and the air con pipes ( which I'm still not sure if I should keep the air con) Took off the brake and clutch reservoir tanks. I am trying to clear the bay a bit ready to be cleaned and painted, also trying to decide where to relocate bits so I can simplifier the bay more.

I also got the ok from my girlfriend to put a few bits in the dishwasher to clean them up. Don't know how :D

Not much was done on Monday but hope to be down there again on Friday.

Cheers,

Ant

It's been a few weeks since I last posted, so a little update.

I managed to remove the whole Hicas system, from the rear Hicas system all the pipework under the car and the solienoid was removed ages ago. Replaced this with a Z1 Hicas elimination bar.

P1010775.jpg

I then moved onto the engine bay, removing a few bits ready to clean the bay up. Sealed a few bits up that I didn't want to get wet then went at the bay with some good old Gunk. This is the first time i've really used this stuff on some really thick ground in dirt. Applied then jet washed off, I done this a couple of times and this stuff is really good and removed some thick old dirt. I also cleaned up a few more small bits off the engine.

I am thinking of relocating the battery to the boot and next I have to remove the battery tray as this is rusted up quite a bit. I also removed the brackets on the wings that held the hicas solenoid to the car.

Hopefully the bay will be ready to rub down and spray up soon.

A few more pics below of the before and after the cleaning of the bay.

Cheers,

Ant

Been a few months since my last update. It's been a bit slow recently, i took my block heads and crank to ctm performance to have the engine work carried out. They said that it would take 2 weeks to carry the work out, 4 weeks later and i get my engine back but still had to wait for the bearings as no where in this country had them. After 2 weeks these turned up too.

Scott at Custom Exotics sprayed the block and a few other bits and i was then able to start putting things back together.

As you can see from the pics i've manged to get a few bits back and gotta say thanks to Brett and Scott for the help i've had so far with a few little things. Got to get the knock sensor ordered quick as i don't want to get to far and not be able to fit it.

I am going to have another colour in the engine bay too, but not going to tell you what colour it is :D Going to have a few bits chromed as well.

Really looking forward to getting it all done, i have enjoyed building it so far but bound to have some bad moments.

Here is a few pics, hope you enjoy.

Cheers,

Ant
