Not sure where you got that information but that's incorrect. Only the NA can have its HG changed without engine removal.

Got told by a mechanic and got quoted over a £1000 for it to be done.

On an NA its possible but very hard work, but on a TT whether jap or UK is near impossible, sorry but its an engine out job.

Your mechanic is miss-informed, although for £1k for a new HG, that's not too bad, although you could probably get it done cheaper by a Z specialist. If the engine is coming out though you'd be wise to do a mild rebuild too.

£1k for headgasket change is about right...providing he is having the heads tested and skimmed at the same time.

Make no difference wethere its UK or Jap, the cars are identical other than minor spec differences.

You can do the HG with the engine in for TT or NA, but its just as labour intensive and potentially more labour intensive as pulling the engine anyway.

just done my tt auto head gaskets ..(was sooo much easier with engine out) & if you do the work yourself (except skimming/pressure test) it can be done very cheap...i got all parts water pump, thermostat, full gasket set, cam belt, knock sensor, pipe for plenum bypass, welding for egr bypass, including a second hand head(as one was cracked)for about £300 quid u gotta look around on the net a bit but its worth it!!
