It is not a confirmation of it sending - it is confirmation that is has been read by the person you sent it to.

 

So if the person has not opened it and read it OR they have read it via their email and not thru the site then it will forever remain 'Unconfirmed'.

I thought unconfirmed meant the recipient hasn't read it, does it mean its not been sent as i'm sure i've had a couple like that.

First part is correct David however the second part is only partly true. Mods have the option to send a read reciept to the sender. And to be fair on most accounts Mods dont do it on purpose they just forget (have done it myself by accident :p )
