Just doing a bit of research into healthy eating and just did a bit of a search on some of the Subway sandwiches.

Now, Subway promote their brand on the fact that they are more of a healthy alternative to say, McDonalds or Burger King. Whilst it may apply to a few of their sandwiches, a lot actually contain MORE calories than a Big Mac meal!

I love the Meatball Marinara for instance, sure, I knew it wasn't a healthy option but had no idea that a foot long one contained nearly 1000 calories! That's insane! It's not the most unhealthy sandwich though, that crown goes to the Chicken and bacon sandwich with a whopping 640 calories! That's over 1200 calories in a foot-long sandwich.

On a slightly different note, supermarket pizzas are always advertised as a 1/2 pizza portion? It's quite deceptive as it's always in small print "This contains 380 calories per half pizza" No other food I've noticed has this. It's always listed as either per portion and 100g values.

I try to eat healthy, fish a few times a week, steamed vegetables and some light sauce. I don't eat fried food, smoke and I very rarely drink.

Not always been like this, I've spent many years over eating and not eating the right things as well as not doing the exercise. I used to exercise a lot, but spent a few years of being a lazy bugger. Luckily, I have a fast metabolism and have remained reasonably lean and haven't really increased in size that much although have noticed some differences. Approaching 30, I thought I'd nip it in the bud and dispense with all the junk. I have been doing LOTS of excersie lately and enjoy it!

There was that documentary on a few months back about Sandwiches, and Subway came out worst. Salt content If I remember correctly was by far the worst for them.

What type of excercises do you do mate?

Gym 5 days a week. About an hour and a half. I'll cut down to every other day probably once I'm toned again.

I do about 45 mins of CV and then weights. I've been back 2 months now and its amazing the difference makes in even a few weeks. When I started back, my legs ached, I got tired easily, but now, yeah, as always, the first 10 - 15 mins are the worst. Stamina and well-being have gone RIGHT up. :)

I used to swim a lot when I was younger. 3 nights a week, usually 2 hours each session.

Yuk! I can't even drink coffee, let alone downing a bag of sugar a week.

can remember reading this from the subway packet one day when i was in, thought we were making the good choice rather than going to mcdonalds lol

A couple of months ago I started buying a foot long steak & cheese subway nearly everyday, stopped last week more due to the cost, but having read this thread I am glad I stopped and won't bother going back.

at what point did it not hit anyone that eating a foot long sandwich was not a good idea for your health!! lol We'll be like Americans if we start that ;)

They aren't that big. Even the small ones are barely enough....and they are nearly 500 calories!!!

Just what I was thinking

but it's a foot long! lol

The way I look at any fast food place is it should just be a treat now and again. Only way to eat healthy is to make it yourself.

A pepperami is about 0.75ft though, it's not big. If you liquidised it and did the same to what you'd eat as a healthy portion of home cooked goodness, I bet there wouldn't be any difference in volume.

I only used to eat a subway once a month and maybe a pizza once a month. But, I've not had a pizza for ages. Sooooooo unhealthy.

To put a damper on this,

I have just had a medium "sizzler" from Dominos !!

Had 2 bottles of Stella and just about to get off my chair and get my 2nd glass of Malt Whisky !

Sorry guys, but my Saturday night is for me, being a pig !

Have done over 70 hours this week, so I reckon I am due it ?

Alan..........

Damn nice, 5 days a week? Sounds intense. So how's your lifting? What you benching, curling, etc?

but it's a foot long! lol

Spot on mate!

I spent most of my sixth form in the gym, twice a day, its better than drugs the feeling you get, its a shame work gets in the way now :(

I don't do weights etc, but i do a lot of mountainbiking, been to a lot of

places, wales, forest of dean etc... The buzz i get while riding some

fast singletrack is intense, real tunnel vision type stuff, and to top it all

off.... it's good for you. I used to race motocross, and i have to say the

buzz is on a par with that, sadly... it's almost as expensive too!

Anyone who has experienced it will know what i'm on about, there's a few

ex members from here i keep in touch with who are well into their bikes too.

It's a social thing as well as a good way of keeping fit.

There was a programme on about Subway. Look at Meatball Marinara sandwich; more salt than 27packets of ready salted crisps! Steak and Cheese has 1,360 calories per sandwich!

as i recall most subs are ok if you dont add sauce / dressing or extra cheese.....the telly did a prog on them and pret a manger / Mc'ds ....pret was far worse per serving also extra salt yet because they are made fresh on site they dont have to put any nutritional info on the boxes...the only info they have on boxes was the usual healthy bullsh1t....free range...wholemeal...bla bla...but their website does list the info

heres a link Si for all the range
