Hi I was wondering if anyone knew how difficult it would be to keep ABS with a bigger brake kit or get it set up correctly. I have heard of peole fitting bigger brakes then having an accident because the wheels locked up. So can ABS be kept or reset for the new setup? how? Electronic jiggery pokery or a mechanical solution?

Safety is my consideration when looking to go down a bigger brake route.

My understanding is that the Skyline GTR setup works fine on our cars with ABS, and anyone that needs more stopping power than the 325mm discs and Brembo calipers off a GTR provide needs their head looking at for road use.

Hey guys I think I'm going to disable the ABS for track days by pulling the fuse. It all works just fine on road at road speeds. Seemed only to get confused at very high speeds (this could also be me treading on the pedal too hard and locking them up)

It doesn't.

Had mine do the pulsing-but-not-stopping thing a few times on me with that setup. Was why I binned it, very, very scary.

Oh! Not very helpfull. I have heard that the GTR setup is OK, are you sure it was not your paritcular car?

I have a set in my garage to go on, will have to investigate more now.

Anyone else have first hand knowledge of GTR Brembos on the 300?

Somebody from Holland came accross to Billing a few years ago. He 'skidded' on gravel at 5mph and run into the back of another Z because of the ABS having a bit of a meltdown!

He had GTR calipers and discs fitted IIRC and had the standard ABS intact.

Same with my ABS at very low speeds the abs is all over the place :(

Anyhting over 40mph and its perfect???

Exactly, I nearly overshot onto a busy roundabout when I hit loose surface on the entry. It's common on a lot of Z's with this setup.

Just fit the brembo's, bin the ABS and job done! It's a good setup and not hard to modulate without ABS anyway.

If you want to retain the ABS am I right to presume the best braking system would be to install larger discs and relocation brackets ?? This would then have no detrimetal effect on the ABS balance ??

There seems loads of info on brake setups that don't work too well but not much on what does.

I have got ksports all around. i was thinking of pulling the fuse and letting the insurance know the abs has been disabled due to it being unsafe ?

Hey mate do you find you abs playing silly buggers at road speeds with your Ksports?

I dont seem to have a problem on the road but really noticed it on the track so I will pull the fuse on track and leave it in on road.

Sounds like I need to go and test on some gravel etc and see what happens.

I have had no issues at all, so far at least, my current setup is standard calipers relocated to fit 325mm Skyline discs.

Even with the cheapest pads, (fitted to get the car moving) the brakes are better than standard, although they do over heat quickly as you would expect.

I have now got some Porterfields, is that right?, to go in but was going to fit the GTR calipers....Now not sure as I like ABS.

Theses problems would still exist with the stock setup sticking, gravel and ice are problems for abs systems!

This is true of course, Audi used to fit a switch on some of their Quattro cars to enable the ABS to be turned off just for snow etc.

And I had a Seat Leon that dispplayed similar problems on slippery roads at very slow speeds, dealer said all was ok with the system.

Makes you wonder why the maufactures dont disable ABS automatically below say 5 mph.

ABS is fine at normal road speeds and way beyond. you will not even feel a slight twitch from 100 to nothing. but if you are on a single B road and 20mph and try stopping quickly you have no chance?

Hey mate

I took it out this evening and had a couple of strange pedal feel moments where it really didnt feel like it was braking as it should be. So I pulled the ABS fuse and tried the car out with the ABS fuse pulled and it worked fine and I had to stand on the pedal real hard before it locked up. The roads were slightly greasy and I was traveling at about 50 and slowing down and then speeding up again. I have to say that I felt more comfortable with the car locking up and sliding than I did with the ABS.

Very interesting. I wounder what the insurance compay would say if you told them??

Good question! I need to send them an updated version of the list of mods on the car. I'll have to add it to the list.

It didn't make much difference to my insurance. Not all Z's had it anyway, was an option I think.
