Alpine and Rockford Fosgate are good brands.

Key thing is to go for high snesitivity. Ignore max power handling, as manufacturers use different measurements to fool the consumer.

A 6dB increase in sensitivity equates to a DOUBLING in perceived volume wiht the same amplifier power. Increases in amp. power provide diminishing returns in SPLs.

Go fo max sensitivity speakers.

This site is pretty good for info.

what's your budget?

Because for £800, the Phoenix gold Titanium Elite components are very good wink.gif

As are my CDT Audio HD52's, at £450 a set. biggrin.gif

mac,

I fitted a set of Kenwood components in the front, with minor mods to the speaker mounts but still retaining the original grills. They were the KFC-PSR71P (http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/speakers01/kfcpsr71p.asp) and in the rears I fitted a pair of Pioneer 6x4 TS-H463. But I have subsequently found a pair of Kenwoods that would have perhaps been a better/easier fit: http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/speakers01/kfc4675.asp

The fronts were £120 and the backs were £50, and I'm very pleased, good definition and plenty loud enough, IMHO, a bit more realistic if you don't want to sell the family cat!

No andy, I'm pretty sure I am right this time !!

3bd is equivalent to doubling amp power, 6bd makes it sound to the human ear twice as loud. That is according to the website I gave the URL to above !

Hi Mac,

You should check out the Polk Audio Momo components. They won several awards for sound quality, but also look the absolute business (brushed aluminium tweeters and kevlar drivers) I think they cost around £350 a set.

The decibel (dB) is used to measure sound level, but it is also widely used in electronics and signals. The dB is a logarithmic unit used to describe a ratio. The ratio may be power, or voltage or intensity or several other things. To get a taste for logarithmic units, first let's look at some numbers:

For instance, suppose we have two loudspeakers, the first playing a sound with power P1, and another playing a louder version of the same sound with power P2, but everything else (how far away, frequency) kept the same.

The difference in decibels between the two is given by

10 log (P2/P1) dB where the log is to base 10.

If the second produces twice as much power than the first, the difference in dB is

10 log (P2/P1) = 10 log 2 = 3 dB.

If the second had 10 times the power of the first, the difference in dB would be

10 log (P2/P1)= 10 log 10 = 10 dB.

If the second had a million times the power of the first, the difference in dB would be

10 log (P2/P1) = 10 log 1000000 = 60 dB.

This example shows one feature of decibel scales that is useful in discussing sound: they can describe very big ratios in power with numbers of modest size.

so 3db increase = twice the volume!!

sorry nelson - your wrong again LOL!!! biggrin.gif

You may be worng because you are assuming that the PERCEPTION of sound volume is linear with SPL. I said it sounds twice as loud, not that the SPL's will be doubled 1 - there a difference ! ;-)

IF I AM wrong it is because the website I got the info. from is wrong !

OK OK OK OK! LOL I only wanted to know a good upgrade. I am not into big booming ice ,Just wanted to upgrade the kak stock ones wink.gifMy Pioneer is 4x50 w so don't need to go massive.

vrc 165 velocity £120 16cm

I am looking to get these in the front, they sound realy really nice,

db is used to measure sound level

3db increase = twice the amount of sound.

Psychologists also say that our sense of hearing is roughly logarithmic. In other words, they think that you have to increase the sound intensity by the same factor to have the same increase in loudness.

discuss.

Mac Man

Just fitted some JBL GTO speakers for the rear, direct replacement for the sh*t standard ones. They Only cost me about £80 from Halfords last month from what I can remember, I will get you the model number tomorrow. Quoted over 50 RMS more then enough for ur headunit.

And they sound pukka in layman terms lol

If you have aux amp outputs on your head unit, and there's no budget, personally I'd get 1 or maybe a couple of amps (front & back), as the integrated head unit ones are generally pretty crap.

Even cheapish 50WPC ones will be better than what you have at the min I'd have thought.

Besides, amps look cool innit. wink.gif

Sony Xplod, are reasonalbe I think quality wise (for the money), and will go beautifully with your car. smile.gif biggrin.gif

https://www.edworthys.co.uk/acatalog/Sony_Amplifiers.html

Look at https://www.edworthys.co.uk/framesets/sproducts_start_audio.html for some idea on prices.

Don't get kenwood or alpine, else you'll have to get the associated sunstrip, and that'd look worse than rice. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

As stated before a db is a ratio - therefore it has no units. In order to define an amount of sound you have to refer the db to a pressure, typically the micro pascall.

If our snes of hearing is logarithmic, how can a doubling in SPL = twice as loud !!

You've just proven yourself wrong.

Have a nice day !

Whatever you do, do not get them from edworthy's.

I live near them, and they are shocking.

Anyway, instead of all this technical stuff:

CDT Audio

(Momo) Polk Audio

JL Audio

DLS

Diamond

MB Quart

Phoenix Gold

Are all excellent.

try www.caraudiodirect.co.uk - excellent prices, sound technical knowledge and quick delivery.

3db???

Nope, 2db doubles the amplitude of a noise signal but that's in MHz! (crystals vibrating at a very high speed to create the sound) If you would like an in depth description I will be available after 5:30pm tomorrow.......LMAO

But then again, I do work in Ultrasonics..... and I'm looking for holes, cracks, porosity etc.. in Aluminium.

So F1 cars can go faster, planes are safe to fly in, tanks can take hits, ships can sail, and cars won't rust, oh and so ferrari can build on a nice light chassis!

Mac,

If your after speakers, try QXL.com. Look in the automotive section and then the speakers section (obviously!) a seller called 'knights'. They have top quality speakers everything from tweeters to 32" sub woofers all at really good prices delivered following day to your door. I don't shop anywhere else for my ICE now.

You can also get mStation MP3 players for 200 notes too (wicked bit of kit!)

Matty.

Try infinity, they do a 6x4" 2 way that will drop straight into the rears and get 6.5" components in the front doors.

Thanks to everone but now I dont know what to go for now LOL.

QQ are the rears a real **** to match for size?

Macca, got some Ultimate component sets going cheap. For the rears you won`t go far wrong with Kickers.

To be honest there are that many out there it`s pot luck unless you want to spend silly money, then you are looking at Cerwin`s or Dynaudio.

Ok BOB unless you don't want to price em on here? I will call you tomorrow bud wink.gif

Oh did I tell you I wont be fitting my Tracker in the door mate,it's going in the boot biggrin.gif.

I may as well chip in my two penneth worth.......

I've got a set of MB Quart 2 ways in the doors which are pretty good. I dropped some Kenny 4x6's in the back and they hardly sound at all (probably not wired up right, but I can't be arsed to check).

Now for the wildcard................. just got back from Florida where I had a Mitsubishi Eclipse for the week. Standard system sounded the absolute ******** up front. It had an Infinity head unit, but I don't know what the speakers were. However, if you're bored and want to do some investigating, I'm sure there's a Mitsubishi website out there somewhere...........!!!

Live by the sword, die by the sword.....

ian just buy a good amp and get some decent speakers for the back and front ,then a nice 10inch sub will do ya to plug into the amp
