This is why being part of the EU is stupid, they think they have some rules over us, like attempting to tell us what to do.

was unworkable in the first really....i remember a market trader who sold fabric was told he couldnt sell by the yard responded brilliantly by putting a large sign up which said

"please note we sell fabric by the .89m"

hello love how many yards would you like ? :D

They're only still pissed off with us..... Two world wars and one world cup.....

There was talk about 20 odd years ago about changing the sides of the road we drive on too.

Least if the UK did change to KPH, I wouldn't have to change my speedo! LOL

As for drinks, meh, couldn't give a crap. Not that I really drink, but as long as it was still available, I wouldn't give a toss.

would still ask for a pint no matter what it was sold in, after all, we still ask for a hoover when its actually a vaccum cleaner lol

did you know a market salesman got put in prison actual prison for selling bananas in 'lbs' in the mid 80's! thankfully he only spent a week in the cells to be fair it was a sneeky way of upping the prices i guess - didnt deserve inprisoning tho imo!! we'll never be forced to use the metric system -

The metric system is far superior to the illogical hotch potch of our imperial system. Anyone involved in engineering or science knows this. If it wasn't for the Americans even greater reluctance to ditch their outmoded imperial system we'd all be metric by now. The sooner we get metric the better.

ok then how come the metric system has 5 different mesures of a ltr and 4 for cc? its flawed as is the imperial system ok 12 is a shite number to work too, but if i crash at 150mph i know im going to die, weather at 150 kmh well i wouldnt have a clue? is that fast?

what about bhp and ps? or torque? wich is metric? if neiher then why isnt there one?

Not really sure what you mean by 5 different measures of a litre and 4 of cc, a litre is a litre and a cc is a cc, if you mean adding a prefix like K(kilo) or m (milli) well then yes but it's perfectly logical way to express larger or smaller quantities and the format is the same throughout the metric system i.e 1 kilogram is 1000 grams, 1 kilowatt is a 1000 watts, 1 kilovolt is a 1000 volts.

BHP is an imperial measure of power, PS is not really a true metric measure of power, its a 'made up unit' so that comparisons can be made with the imperial BHP unit. The Watt is the metric measure of power. Torque is a force applied about an axis and is measured in Newton meters, Nm metric, and foot Pound ftlb imperial.

I'm sure the guys at GM in America would get just as confused with metric measurements. It's just what your used to.

I got used to imperial bolts and thread sizes fairly easily when I rebuilt my Chevy. I was brought up with metric, but don't really have a problem with Imperial stuff. It would be a bloody boring world if we all copied the Germans.

We have metric over here for speeds, distance but nobody well ever remove the "pint" :duffer:

The French and Germans will try to dictate everything in Europe. What started as an economic community is being turned into a federal alliance where the larger countries call the shots in terms of all aspects of the development of the federal alliance. Look what happened with the Lisbon treaty - a treaty which couldn't be ratified unless all members agreed. Well the week before our vote (thanks to our consitution which gives the people and not the politicans the right to decide) a french minister more or less implied that we would be marginalised if we voted against it. So what did Paddy and Mary do - raised the middle finger right back at them and got a large no majority  . So what do the "super" powers do, they say that they are going to ratify it anyhow and implied once again that our standing would be damaged. Now we are asked to vote again, or keep voting until they get the "correct" result. And these politicans will frown upon the corrupt elections in Zimbabwae and go to war in the name of their version of democracy!

Fair play to the UK for holding your currency. Considering you are in recession, control of the currency will help get out of it quickly. Historically if England devalued, Ireland would follow suit as, but because of the euro now being our currency the market which we relied most on for trade, is drying up. After all the pound has lost 25% of its value in a short space of time making our exports (your imports) expensive. That said the euro has given us stability since its introduction coupled with historically low interest rates. So 2009 is going to be a very difficult year (as has 2008) with our economy expected to contract by 4%.

Now how the hell , did I spin off on this tangent.... what was this thread about again?
