Hi Team,

Well, my engine is out and I'm stripping to rebuild. While its out though what could I do to improve the cooling of both coolant and oil?

Can you get a bigger rad, or high flow water pump? Some cheap ideas would be good as I'm not made of money,:wack: but I want to make sure I don't have to take the Bast**d out again!:headvswal

look forward to your suggestions

I've seen High water content Radiators on ebay and oil coolers.... don't know what the quality is like though.... perhaps others can advise on that

Otherwise try the usual suspects Dan Zaat at DTA, Jeff at Zedworld, Smithy etc for advice...

Yes, there are lots of Uprated Radiators out there. Koyo were always the most popular, but there are plenty others out there.

If you are rebuilding the engine then its a good idea to remove the castings on the water channels around the engine, in particular around the back 2 cylinders, as they suffer the most.

The easiest mod to aid cooling is free.:)

Remove that stupid air con rad from in front of the main water rad.

If your zed is a UK spec fit a jap spec water pump pulley, big difference.

You can bypass the plenum warming system, and plumb the water coolant direct to the turbos.

You can fit aluminum replacements for bottom hoses.

Uprated radiator, uprated rad cap (not nismo).

Redline water wetter

Refill coolant at 50/50 af/water ratio, or the anti corrosion element of the af is not effective!

Thanks guys, its a Jap spec but has an uprated (ally) underdrive pulley which is smaller than original so probs need to get the matching water pump pulley.

I've got to say I like my air con so the air con rad will stay.Sorry die hard HP fans!

Legarth, I'm interested in what you said about the water channel castings, What do mean? got any pics or direction on what to do with them?

why not nismo? too high pressure?

Pressure not a problem, it leaks from the top of the cap, where the press fitting is underneath the sticker!

nismo opens much later than standard or greddy.

aha, well seeing as I have a Nismo radiator cap I can subscribe to that - even on cold mornings like we're having at the moment, it will take ages to warm up, but then even under normal driving it will eventually get up to about 96 degrees, and then start to fall off. might be tempted to swap it back and see what happens...

I have to admit Ive not noticed it leaking - it does drop a cup or so after being topped up, but thats probably losing it from the overflow tank.

Dave I think there is a crossed line :)

I am not Legrath, I am much better looking :D

Also a rad cap does not influence warming up time, a thermostat does.

  sorry dude just got back from the gym and am a bit light-headed :D

I dunno ive always been confused about my running temp being a little too high - the motor's being looked at next week so hopefully he can get to the bottom of it

Ive had the plenum water bypass done, i have a jap water pump, a greddy rad cap, ive reomoved the rubber seal at the back of the engine too for extra ventilation and in the summer it didnt go past 80degrees, now it sits between 70-76 Im now doing some research on replacing my rad with an uprated one :D

You basically want to clean up any casting flash inside the block's coolant galleries. You'll notice them once engine is stripped. If your getting the block/heads decked and honed/bored then get the engineering shop to do it.
