Hi I have just bought my first zx today its a twin turbo model. The seller told me before I bought the car that it was not boosting, this didn't put me off too much as it was a bit of a bargain.

However I obviously want to try and sort the problem out and was wondering if anybody has any ideas of what is the likley cause or any checks I can do to try and diagnose the fault. Any help would be great :)

....Can you get a haynes maual for ZX's, so I can have a read and see what is involved?

Nope! But the Nissan service manual is on-line here on the club site somewhere. I used to have the link, but I've lost all of my Explorer Favs recently, so can't locate it at the mo.

To be honest if you are used to taking engines out and rebuilding them, this shouldn't be a problem. It's just a simple engine out and turbo swap, it's not like you have to strip off the heads and recondition the lifters, now that is a long job.

If you have a crack at it yourself. There are various help guides on the web. Only tip I would give it gets lots of small containers and label them up so you know where you got what bolts from.

i've got the same problem with mine at the minute. mine is passenger side turbo, but luckily the turbos are under warranty still so should hopefully be sorted foc (minus pulling engine).

the way i found out which 1 it was, was to just pull the actuator feed pipe off the i/c and pop a boost gauge on an give it a lil rev.

anyway, hope u get it sorted mate

You would have to drive the car to get positive boost, most turbo cars will not give you +ve boost when stationary.

Thanks again for all the replies, I'm still in two minds whether to fix it or cut my losses and sell it on. How much do you think it would be worth at present with the turbo problem. Quick spec is:full ss exhaust, turbo timer, black leather interior in good nick, manual g/box with quick change, TT, private plate, uk car, rebuilt engine 20k miles ago, clutch 6 months ago. few rust bubbles on rear arches. Picture below:

not much more than you paid mate..plus you need to be subscribed to sell here iff your planing on getting rid

well mine was reading 0 on passenger side and hitting around 5-6 psi on the driver, plus dumpvalve that side was goin off, but not other. So i'd say mine must be kicking in, they are stage 2 turbo technics though so maybe thats why?

So you have two boost gauges ?. One for each turbo ?.

Where did you fit the feeds in on these to get two seperate readings ?

It doesn;t matter what turbo's you have, if one of them is siezed you will never hit positive boost.

no i just used the feed off the i/c so i could get a reading before it equalised the pressure on the inlet manifold, the gauges aren't fixed, just used 1 in to see if it showed which side wasn't spooling.

I only mentioned the turbos being uprated in response to not be able to hit positive pressure when stationary, im quite aware that the inlet will never see any pressure

a boost pipe could have come off?

i changed both turbos on mine with out taking the engine out so it is possible

The car seems to boost fine when stationary, the boost gauge shoots right up and you can hear the turbo/turbo's????????

Think i'll have a proper look at it tomorrow and then make a decision whether to keep it or not.

Afraid the car should not be boosting positively when stationary, you may have got pressure approaching 0 from -9psi, and that may have given the appearance of positive boost?

The engine will rev because it has no load before it needs or requires any boost.

ok well if its not actually boosting at all as you say, then why does the gauge read 5-6 psi and you can hear the dumpvalve dumping? surely it won't dump if theres nothing to dump??? and why does the piping that side go hard when revving it up?

when i say revving, i don't just mean slowly increasing revs i mean pumping the throttle to the floor and nearly hitting the limiter.

tbh i only posted on this thread to try and help someone out by saying what i did to find, not to have everyone tell me that what my car does can't happen and basically get called a liar. I won't bother trying to help in future!

Easy fella, don't spit your dummy out.:nono:

No one is calling you a liar, we are simply saying that you should not be getting past 0 on your boost gauge when the car has no load, no matter how much you rev it or how hard your pipes are ;)

Have had a think and there is a way of getting +ve boost when stationary, because of a defect on the car, but with all the teddies strewn asunder, I am offski :(

My dump valves will go off if i rev the car stationary

My boost guage doesn't show anything on the positive side if I just sit there and rev it............. but then it doesn't show anything on the positive side if I was doing 70 down the motorway at the moment!!!! That's 'cus the turbo is ****ed!!!

As will mine, gotta be a hefty prod of the throttle mind from about 2k

The dump valves going off don't indicate positive boost, it means the throttle body has closed and the backed up air is going out of the DV which is set particularly low.

standed tubs here and iff i rev my motor while under the bonnet i can feel my boost pipes filling out and getting hard(

thats not right is it..anything other than boosted air would not lift the valves other wise every saxo and corsa would have dump valves and the "backed up air" would lift them:confused::confused:

Boost pipes will feel like they are getting harder because they are going from a vacuum therefore easier to squeeze and getting filled with air.
