34

The Short flashes are the 1st number (they flash 3 times), the long flashes are the 2nd number (they flash 4 times) = 34

Code 34 means there is a fault with your Detontation/Knock sensor. Either the sensor itself it failed or the connector or the loom. It basically means the ECU is not getting a reading from it.

Your car is in safety mode. Which means reduced boost, richer fuel maps and retarded timing. Car will be considerably down on power. (if you have an Electronic Boost controller than boost wont be reduced but the fueling and timing still will be).

If you search code34 there is a lot of info out there. The first thing to do is clean the connector, and try again. If the knock sensor has failed you can either bypass it or replace it.

Hint

To reset your ecu and clear the error code:

Disconnect the battery, hold foot on brake pedal to discharge the circuits in the ecu

Wait about 2 hours (can take longer)

Reconnect battery and check again

where is the knock sensor any pictures would be nice

The Knock sensor is under the plenums inbetween the 2 heads at the back of the engine and is not accessible without several hours of labour stripping the top down to get to it.

The connector is at the back of the plenum in the centre. A grey 2 pin plug. But if you search for "code34" or "knock sensor" you should find more info and pics.

thanx for that buddy i will see what i can do

dont put a resitor in until you know its a faulty sensor and that your not actually knocking ;)

Code 34 does not mean knocking.

ah yes, what code is it when your sensor senses knocking then?

it does'nt throw a code unfortunatly when it senses knocking.

Oh i thought it did. So what would it say on the conzult? if it does? I really thought it would show a code. Doesnt it clear it once you restart the car.

The knock sensor will retard timing, lower boost and fuel etc if it senses know but won't throw a code. Only a problem with the sensor itself will throw a code "34".

So if you don't get a code 34, it doesn't mean you are not getting knocking, it just means the sensor is working well.

Matt, once you sort the problem out, you'll be getting a lot better running and you will notice the difference in performance.

so do i clean the plug up first and then do the ecu test again?

  • Author

ok will i have to take the battery off for 2 hours and press the brake ?

no, you should be able to do this without removing the battery but with it being the dett sensor im not too certain.

Just unplug the connector and clean the teath then do a ecu check again, if the same thing then do the battery thing.

I suspect it might need a run tho

yeah if you ever take the engine out for whatever reason your well advised to replace the knock sensor while its out...:)

did you get hold of andy in thetford?

yea i did but he hasnt got a consultz so no joy there but he has got some bits i need

You need to disconnect the battery and do what i said after cleaning the connectors or the code will still show even if the knock sensor then has a good connection.

Once the ecu has an error it will continue to display it until its been reset in my experiance.

A couple more things.

Once you have cleaned the connection etc put the battery back on then check for codes

You should get code 55 - means all is well

Then start the car and check it again - I think with certain errors they only show after the car has been started, consult can tell how many times the car started with a certain error etc.

I have an informeter always connected which reads all the ecu values and shows any errors (like a mini consult)

Also sometimes I have found that sometimes it can take a bit longer than 2 hours with the battery disconnected to reset the ecu, thats why I said press the brake as the brake lights are always live even with the igniton off.

leave it over night to reset if needed.

iv'e not heard of this, suppose it would be something vaguel'y similar to the check control sys on the 3 series bm? any more info on this ?

(where can be obtained ,a pic etc) ?
