  3. feck started typing the reply then had to answer the phone by the time i posted there's another three posts Spare tyre is not part of the test
  4. Paul C is right neither front fog lights or reverse lights are testable items and dont get checked during the MOT. But if fitted they should work or you may end up with a little ticket of some nice gentlemen in peaked caps (C&U requirements dont quite match up with MOT requirements) An MOT certificate can only be issued with an expiry date of up to 13 Months after the issue date, but to be issued requires the production of the current certificate a photo copy wont do. the other thing to watch is that if you take your car for an MOTwith more than a month left on the current certificate you will only be issued a 12 month certificate! So make sure theres less than a month on it !!!!!! :) SSRAE A general breakdown of the MOT can be found here http://www.vosa.gov.uk/ along with some other info regards issue of certificates and complaints procedures but its not really that indepth and to run a page listing all the requirements would take forever (theres quite a lot in the testers manual) Paul C seems quite a clued up guy i'm guessing he's in the trade so you should just ask him lol ;). nothing like passing the buck!!! Joking asside just post any MOT questions in the help forum. As I'm sort of errmmm in the buisness I'll try and answer as soon as i can.
  5. stick blocks or even the wheels under the sills, then if the car does come of the stands it gives you a little safety barrier
  6. mabey just loose bell housing bolts an the gearbox is ready to fall off ;) nothing to worry about then  oooopsssss only kiddin :slap: but bets its got you thinking ;)
  7. Mark when an engines been overheated the timing belts usually least of your worries. Usually piston pick up fecked head gasket etc occurs. As Willie points out the screech is unlikely to have been the timing belt, probably due to the steam round the engine its been an auxiliary belt got wet and started to slip. you say that after topping up the system the engine ran ok, i'd hazzard a guess an say youve been a lucky sod and got away with it. Ive never had the pleasure of working on a Z32 engine ( yet!!!!!, still looking for my first real car :) ). but ive worked on plenty of other engines (usually a bit bigger than a Z though) and work to the principle that if it aint broke dont try and fix it, do what your doing and monitor the situation, if your loseing power, losing coolant, the oils turning grey and sludgy or if the cooling systems pressurising then yes look deeper. but if its not leave it be, sometimes when something is stripped down it just never goes back to how it should be. Back to the timing belt I reckon that a change would really only be for peace of mind. that said ive been there myself, once you've got something in your head it knaws away until you end up driving the car at no more than 2000rpm. If your in this frame of mind probably then best to have someone look at the belt condition then you can get back to driving it as it should be driven. Hey but you shouldnt listen to me many many moons ago i burst the belt on my pride and joy a 2.8 supra through pure lazyness ( i was at the time working as a mechanic and had all the facilities at hand to do a quick check or change) Luckily i got away with just fitting a new belt. I was too lazy or was that frightened to look for any damage to the engine. the car started and ran perfectly, I never looked back. And Willie, have been lookin out for the red Z round town but havent seen it yet
  8. glad to see your getting sorted with your motor, I take it youve gone down the road of replacement rather than repair hope it all goes well and you get to enjoy driving it for a bit longer this time :D

  13. Always better to match any of the components over an axle, shocks springs tyres etc. but for the sake of the mot you only need to change the leaking one. Speak to the garage regards the retest fee, cause technicaly they could charge you again anyway
