  1. its settled, a single is sufficient for my needs! thanks for the advice and concern I think my cars in pretty good shape, it purrs all day long! its a jap import and im the first owner in the UK approx 65,000 seems genuine so i hope it holds up well !!! I want to ask you about another thing but i think i should start a new thread for it :)
  2. just say you had the dual intake pipe but then had an apexi filter on each side, surely that would be better? if they fit would it make any difference if you had a different filter on each side!! hence possibly a difference in the amount of air going in at each side??? Im going to get the car chipped, de-catted, boost controller/possibly the manual one and a boost gauge A single apexi would be good, but would two be significantly better and justify the spend in terms of return in performance etc? Im not planning on doing any more mods to the car after the above (I hope not anyway)
  3. I was wondering if anyone on here has tried this ""Dual air intake kit" as found on ebay :) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310064552562&_trksid=p2759.l1259 its cheap, does that necessarily mean its nasty? it looks like it does the same job as the more expensive type? maybe the actual filters arnt as good, would there be enouogh space in the zed to replace them with larger filters in the future>? Many thanks in advance
  4. these two are two perfect options for me, i think i may try and repair it myself, sounds like more fun!!! but if it goes tits up, southport here i come!
  5. 26, just got my first Zed, wanted one for a while, had a calibra once apon a time (similar ish shape) just love the classic coupe shape, timeless, most peeps think it is a supercar!
  6. thanks for that, whats your name by the way
  7. regarding warming the car up: what you are saying makes sense and it makes my life a little easier (i shouldnt be as late for work now!) i was going to take the car to the garage after work but it seems quiter now, i dont know if i've become used to the sound, if im being too paranoid, ive been thinking about it too much and now im confused. I got my flat mate to listen to it and he said it sounded fine (but he has no experience with this car or any other sports cars for that matter). The oil pressure gauge is at the right place at idle and increases when given gas, before the service the oil presure was definately alot higher at idle (and i think above the recommended level?). Im thinking that maybe the last owner filled it with too much oil??? or he was using a thicker or better oil? I think the car is firing on all 6 cylinders as it drives just fine, same as before i think (but not had it long before the service 5 days or so), but to be hones i wouldnt know if it wasnt firing on all six! well, ive got a short list now of the things to do, thanks to you replies: 1st of, replace oil with good stuff 'royal purple?' or similar, if this doesnt sort it, get the coil packs checked, if neither do anything i guess the next thing to do would be getting the timing belt refitted (from a different garage!) can anyone recommend a good garage in the birmingham area??
  8. that may be the best thing to do, but right now i cant afford to do that........ in the first instance im going to get the oil changed see if that sorts it out
  9. yes that what ive been doing whilst ive had the car (using the turbo timer which is quite handy)
  10. thanks for the replies im gona try and get the oil changed tonight i was told that it was a good oil, fully synthetic 10w40 (although its a non-branded one) I'll try one of the branded ones and hopefully this should sort it out, i dont know much about oils but 10w60 seems very thick, Snowygt is your car standard or modified timing belt will be a mission to re-fit! i was there when they started the car up in the morning; after changing the timing belt the night before, it sounded really tappyty and i was quite worried, the garage guy said when you change the timing belt and leave it for a while all the oil soaks to the bottom or something and it takes a while for it to circulate again hence the tapping, is this bu*****t? but in fairness the tapping did go away after it was warm, the tapping sound has only just started again, after ive done about 200 miles (busy bank holiday which im kinda regretting doing) Spark plugs couldnt cause this could they??? ive read something about detonation on this forum, sounds very important but im not sure how to tell the sound of detonation........i used denso spark plugs, i asked for the NGK pfrb-11c ones that are recommended but they couldnt get them and used these instead, i read on the denso box that the spark gap should be adjusted to suit the car car spec, is this necessary?/ sorry for all the questions, and thanks for your help ....oh yeah Andy, im confused now, ive heard quite a few timeds that the car should be warmed up from cold, i also think its in the nissan Zx manual which i read a part of online although im not entirely sure
  11. Ive finally got a Zed (10 days ago), and i was very happy with it until i got it serviced a few days ago. Today i started up the car and its now making a ticking/tapping sound; its not very loud but it defo wasnt present before. Prior to the service the car just purred even from a cold start and drove very well, very smooth and very fast! (ive had other fast cars before), it was imported from Japan approx 1 year ago, seems to be standard other than a turbo timer, needle on standard boost gauge goes to the far left when accelerator isnt pressed, on flooring it the needle goes to the second to top marking about 10psi (although i know alot of people on this forum say that the stock gauges are not very accurate, also i have no way to tell if there is no chip in it). anyway back to the oil pressure, previously from a cold start the oil pressure reading on the stock gauge would read very high, which is what i assume is normal as the oil is still thick when cold; i let it idle until the oil pressure normalises at about 60 psi before driving off, then it gets a bit lower but not that much lower, when stepping on the gas the oil pressure goes higher. According to the Zx buying guide recommended on this forum the oil pressure at idle should be 10-15psi and 30-60 whilst driving. Now that ive had a service done (3 days ago), engine/gearbox oil change, timing belt, spark plugs + non-standard air filter, oil pressure is much lower now, even from a cold start, i think its inline with whats recommended on the ZX buying guide. However the engine is making more noise than it was before or so i think, i may be getting paranoid!?? I have driven it about 200 miles since the service and it has seemed fine. However this morning it seemed a bit luder than normal, and after work when i started it up it sounded louder/noisier still, much like it doesnt have enough oil in it? i checked the engine oil it it seems to be above the max line! i did hear the mechanic say he thought he put too much in? but i assumed only a little bit too much which seems to be the case (i used a non-branded 10w40 fully synthetic engine oil) no way for me to verify the mileage as its an import but reads 100,000km on the odometer, i believed this to be true as the engine did sound very nice, and was very quiet!! please can somebody help with some advice, i think it may not be worth taking it back to the garage i got the work done from and right now i cannot afford to take it anywhere else so its gona be left parked up which is a real shame with this good spell of weather we're having .........sorry for the long post, any help or advice would be very much appreciated
  12. hmm.....yes i think i will thanks
  13. sorry, are you talking to me?? if so, well i guess if i looked i could find the recommended NGKs but ive paid for the densos now and they are fitted. I am not sure, but i think my car is noisier now than before it had its full sevice, although its gradually got louder over a couple of days, could this be anything to do with the spark plugs.....the engine oil was also changed and i think there might be less in it now than there was before the service??? as i think the oil pressure gauge is lower now (but i think it is now in the recommended level according the the zx buying guide on this forum) but the engine noise im talking about does sound as though its due to low engine oil as it just purred before now can hear it slightly tapping, or maybe im just being paranoid??
  14. hi all, just got a ZX about 9 days ago, i got it serviced at the garage and asked them to get the NGK Pfrb-11c plugs as recommended by the forum memebers......however the garage fitted denso plugs which they said were equivalent to the NGKs. I noticed on the Denso plug boxes it states that the spark gap should be adjusted to suit the car spec??? i asked the garage about this and they said it was not necessary! is this ok, can this leads to any problems?? sorry to jump in on ur thread
  15. very interesting info, but not what i wanted to hear!! i.e the car I want to buy is 32bhp less than other UK TT's, but it does go towards explaining the performance. By the way my mates NA ZX was a Jap spec, im not sure if it had anything done to it, and i dont think he knew either, he got it as a cheap import, there was no visible mods, back then i didnt know a SWB existed so i have no idea if it was a SWB or a LWB. I think if you could answer the following question, it may sway me towards or away from buying the car: Is it possible to get the bhp up to 300bhp (which i think is the highest standard power for a UK TT) by replacing certain parts from those TT's with greater power as standard? ; i dont mean doing engine mods such as air filter, exhaust, chip etc or is the lower bhp on the 1994 cars due to internal changes or things that cant be done? I would like to do a few basic things such as exhaust etc but that would be for getting some extra power over the standard; it just seems a shame to have to get modifications done just to get the power up to what other TT's have as standard. I hope you can answer this question, the replies from everyone on the forum are very helpful, thanks.
  16. thanks for the info, i just checked the ZX buying guide and you guys are right, stock is about 9psi and thats what it said in the guide, i must have got confused. I also think its possible that i may have misread the gauge readings during the test drive as ive just looked at a pic of the stock gauges. Taking into account that i was looking at the gauge needle side on, from the passenger side as i didnt want to look at it while i was driving! this would make the psi reading higher than it actually was) .......basically i think the actual reading may have been around 10.5psi??!! well this brief discussion has made me re-evaluate whether or not i should buy this car, i might just do now! but still didnt seem fast! but it was very smooth and a big open country roads.....hmm
  17. I would be very very grateful if someone could help me with the following: I am considering buying a car and was told it was once a 300zx members. It is a UK twin turbo in blue, auto (1994), registration : L26 VOY Its a nice car, however when i took it for a drive i was quite disappointed, it didnt feel as fast as i think it should be. A friend of mine had a non-turbo ZX auto, this car i went to see was probably only a little faster than my mates or even about the same, or so it seemed (but it was a couple of years ago that my mate had his car, so not sure if my memory is serving me correctly). The car is low mileage (70,000 genuine), in good condition, no smoke, and has a quiet engine. When flooring the throttle there wasnt much of a kick from the turbos, the standard dash boost gauge was going to about 13psi, without giving it any gas it returns to -14psi, is this correct, i read a ZX buying guide that someone recommended on this site, and in that it states that a stock TT should go from -14 to +14psi. Im no expert but i think 14psi is a very high setting??? If the gauge is going to 14psi but still not going very fast is there something seriously wrong with the car as it doesnt seem to be the turbos as there is not really any smoke, maybe a tiny bit as normal i guess, defo not smokey; is it true that if it has CATS on then you wouldnt be able to see the smoke? If the previous owner is reading this, or you know him, please can you email me, it would be a big help. Very sorry for the long post, but ive been waiting to buy a Zed for years, and now im finally ready (insurance an cash sorted) i wanna get a descent one! (preferably blue and maybe black or silver, UK TT, manual, and oh yeah leather! The car i am considering is an auto but I would get the manual conversion done at some point) kindest regards
  18. Thanks for the advice, well im 26 but i am going to get insured as a second driver due to my past...shall we say mistakes! insurance is just over £1000 for TPFt and about £1250 for fully comp (this is for a UK car, i havent got a quote for an import yet). I want the car for weekend use only as i wont be able to afford to run it all the time. Want something with nice paintwork, pref black or blue (blue seems to be very rare) , saying that your white car looks very nice! possibly a bit flash for me though, not sure?! lol. leather seats and manual, 2+2 would be very useful and targa'a are always nice, i guess i want the whole spec! Its gotta be fast but ideally standard, with exception of wheels, exhaust and K&N. oh yeah i much prefer the original tail lights with the spongy spoiler that always seems to be the first thing that messes up! i just think it looks nicer....i think im going on to much, dont wanna bore you guys. Heres the funny bit, i want all that at a low price approx £2000-£2500, i have seen some cars with this spec in my price range, but many others at alot more, they seem to be alot cheaper than normal at the moment? will i get what i pay for? or is a bargain possible, i guess thats down to luck. im not in a rush to buy so i guess that should help Another question, if i did buy a newer ZX without the spoiler, is it possible to get one of the old spoilers put on? Many thanks
  19. the other thing was, do you guys think it would be better if i saved a bit more and got a newer Z; the one i am considering is 1990 with 96,000 miles Uk car with service history. Is the condition of the car more important than its age?
  20. Hi all, ive been checking this site out for a while now and have finaaly joined up as i am looking to buy a ZX. I was wondering if any one could tell me if theres any real difference between an import and a UK Zx ? is one better than the other? many thanks peace
