more importantly is the copper track on the pcb? also sometimes the solder just breaks and not the component pins or pcb tracks.

Sounds like a variable resistor! have you tried to carefully resolder its contacts back on?? You could try RS components or maplins for a replacement if you take the old ones with you. Similar to one of these in the pic but blue

Most TT's have Anti lock braking system as standard but some na's may have it too!

I've got three known working ptu's and none of them have any continuity though most of the pins other than two! I know they are fine as I only tested them Saturday on the car:) Most of the time its corroded connectors, ptu pins or a fault in the ptu itself thats the main problem!
