Yea, naturally Ireland being the country it is, SIMI press release on it was wrong, the legislation is here https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/pdf/faqs_co2_en.pdf which clearly states it only applies to new cars. Of all the people to get it wrong SIMI have really shot the motor industry in the foot.

Not quite right Trish, the new road tax rates will only relate to imports first registered on or after 1 January 2008, older cars will be taxed at old rates. However the VRT has gone up, from 30% to 36%
