it looks like the PTU has been relocated so not sure which series it is. and is that a manual boost controller sitting on top of the cam covers??? if it is, get rid of that buddy and plumb in an electronic jobbie :)

yes it is a boost controller who makes the electronic one so i can get one also what is a ptu???

just been looking at another thread and id just like to say very nice engine you got there m8

thank you buddytheres some pics of my full build here... http://300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=114862

the most popular controller seems to be the greddy profec B. if you do a search you'll find loads of info.

PTU – Power Transistor Unit

The PTU is the vehicles ignition module and its job is to deliver the signal from the ECU to each of the Ignition coilpack circuits for igniting each spark plug

the PTU normally sits on the face of the drivers side cam cover, you will see four raised bolt holes where its stock position is. there are two types, a series one and a series two. the series one's tend to go tits up and its a popular mod to upgrade to a serise two. again do a search and you will find tons of info.

Looks like it's had it's plenumn off and maybe even the engine out as I notice the engine bay is the same colour as the bodywork although a little dirty. That's not a standard colour you have there, not for a 300zx anyway (AFAIK).

Also your heater probably doesn't work as the feed pipes seem to have been joint together. This is usually done when the heater matrix packs up and dumps it's water all over the passenger footwell.

Can't really tell too much more from the picutres.

Nice looking car though mate.

Continuing on from this. You are looking for a square box with wrires coming out of each end. The series one will be silver with ridges on it, where as the series two will be a gold colour with black ends.

The PTU sits in between the ECU and the spark, if you ever have problems with the car just shutting down when warm but starting up again after leaving it a while, you have a series one PTU and it's knackered ;).

your right there coz i was freezing on the way back from yorkshire last weekend i have plumbed the matrix back in now and it dont leak so no idea why it wasnt plumbed up after the respray in volvo gold as for the ptu i think i saw that this morning i will ad a pick so if it the right thing

Would never choose that colour in a million years looking at it in a paint shop.

BUT!

I really like it!!! Looks like a nice car you have got yourself there!

so thats a series 1 where do i get a series 2 and does it use the same wiring

Yes its series 1, get a series2 from MJP in the traders area. It comes with its own wiring adaptor to plug into the existing loom.

yup thats a series one, you could try Danny at DTA on here or ebay or every now and then second hand ones pop up for sale. the series two's should come with its own loom so you can plug it straight into the existing loom

is the traders area on here and will the series 2 make the engine run better ?? so for all hte questions but im new on here lol

well fitting a series 2 ptu cant do any harm thats for sure.....but its possible if you're running rough your maf is playing up ...maf's are a source of many zed problems...try pulling the maf connector off and reconnecting....or try another maf...maybe a local member will pop over and do a swap...its 2 min job....better still if anyone local has a conzult you can plug it into...honestly though i'd think a good service is best starting point...oil, filters, sparks, clean your throttle bodies, tps set up etc you'll learn a lot about the motor too as you do it.

thanx uno where is the maf sensor and what should happen when i disconect it and should the engine be running or not when i remove it

cheapest i have found is £100 deliverd for a secondhand 1 is that a good price?

its basically inline/behind the air filter...it meters the air that flows into the engine....you can see it in the last pic you took...the flat black square with a connector coming off it...i'd try fitting a spare / borrowed one off a member first before shelling out £100 (but so you know £100 is about the right price)....replace it with engine switched off...then fire her up

When you say it's not running right was do you mean, can you describe the problem ?

Sounds like you really need a conzult plugged into it to find the problem. I have no idea where you are as I'm not familiar with that place. How far from Romford / essex are you ?. In the meantime I would take off your induction and the MAF. Use some carb cleaner to clean the sensor (don't touch it or brush / wipe it as it's very sensative). Make sure there is no water in your Apexi filter or that it's not damp. If it is heat the oven for 10 mins, turn it off and put the induction in there for 10 mins to dry out or leave it next to (not on top) of a radiator over night.

PTU is Power Transistor Unit. Black smoke would be over fueling. This could be to do with timing or a bad map. Or it could be misfiring due to the PTU. The other problmem may be the CAS (Crank Angle Sensor). But we should start with one thing at a time and oliminate them seperately.
