installed my sound system today,

 

was sounding loverly, then about 10 mins later mt subwoofer just stopped working?

 

didnt go bacng or nothing? nor did any wires short out or nothing?

 

 

tried another speaker in place of it and works fine, so not the amp or wiring?

 

can i check if the sub is ruined?

If it popped you should be able to smell it. Can you hear anything if you push the speaker in?

Have you checked the wires which attach to the cone? Make sure they haven't ripped off.

all wires are fine, and theres no smell.

 

maybe its just died of old age? its about 5 years old, and i used to give it a bit of hell before,

 

just seems odd it died now?

Have you taken the driver out of the enclosure to see if one of the wires have come out of the connectors. if that is ok you will have to check the voice coil has not gone open circuit with a meter.

You can also use a 9v pp3 battery on the terminals to check if the basket moves. +to+ -to- the basket will push forward/up as it should.

Also using both hands equally around the basket, push in gently, it should move freely with no noises or scratching.

Remember a speaker receives voltage from the amp in order to work, it may have had a voltage spike which would have fried the basket, it sometimes happens so quickly that you wouldnt smell any burning.

If the wires to the basket are intact and still no luck then its dead.

You shouldn't need to do that matey, as groover says, use a 9v battery on it. It's usually something simple like a fuse.

 

Do these checks:

 

Check your amp is powering up, not just a standby light but also the remote light should come on when the stereo comes on (eg positive and semi positive/memory).

 

If it doesn't it could be the built in fuse on the amp.

 

If the lights dion't come on it's a fuse on the car that's gone and the stereo won't come on but sounds like it wouldn't be this.

 

Next check your connections are correct, usually you have to bridge the amp to get it to run a sub so check your wiring diagrams.

 

Also check the switches to make sure it's set to run an amp (usually a low pass switch/sub switch etc)

 

After that check the sub itself works using the battery method like groover says, works a treat and should make a movement when you connect the terminals

 

If it doesn't move with a brand new battery THEN your sub is screwed, i wouldn't waste your money till you're 100% sure buddy

thanks guys, but 99% sure sub is screwed.

 

amps have power, and run other speakers.

 

plugd the sub into different terminals on the amp, and even a different soud system and the conclusion is

 

the Sub is F't in the A.

a speaker generally receives 30-40v from the amp depending on power and impedence, 9v DC is not enough to cause any damage whatsoever, being doing it in the sound industry for many years

There is 0v at a star point on a 3phase circuit but I still would not put my finger on it to check!!!

no i dont have a meter sorry,

 

but its not working full stop, on any source of amplifier. on all channels.

 

so if this is the case surely it is not fixable? regardless of the meter reading?

Every coil has a resistance in this case 4ohm or 2ohm. If you measure the resistance and get 4ohm the voice coil is not damaged if you get no resisance the voice coil is open circuit
