Yet more dett. sensor questions :-) :-)

Hi all, I've got the old error 34, although I haven't yet found whether it is the sensor (most likely) or the loom after it, I was wondering which is the best route to go down, re-location or by-pass...

Obviously I would want to re-locate it or replace, but I have heard that alot of aftermarket ECU's don't have safety maps, I have a Mines ECU, is it worth shelling out for a dett sensor, or would bypassing it be just as good? It is bypassed at the moment, but only temporarily, as I've just finished the re-build, so wanted her to start up proper etc. The other thing is, my (stock) boost gauge isn't working, and haven't ever driven one of these before, cannot tell if it is safety boost or not, has anyone else had this fail before? It has mines speedo dials on it, so someone has definately had the speedo out, and there was an after market gauge in the car, tho not connected, am I right in thinking that the sensor for the gauge is right on the air intake at the front?

Cheers all, you guys are life savers!

1. you should have replaced the knock sensor when rebuilding :(

2. stock boost gauge is very inaccurate anyway. fit an aftermarket one.

3. to fit the knock sensor engine needs to be out, :(

4. you can relocate it to the side of the plenum but stock location is the best.

5. you can bypass with a resistor in the connector, not recommended.

What sensor are you refering to on the intake?

Are you actually getting det? can u hear it? or is it just a sensor fail? I dont know if the mines ecu has a saftey map but if it does then its worth having the sensor, could end up very costly otherwise.

Thanks mate, and yeah, numb nuts here should have replaced it during the rebuild, ya live and learn, engines been out twice already, don't fancy it again, but, if needs must... I mean the sensor that feeds the stock boost gauge, do ya know where it is, it could be the gauge itself, it's not something I've worked on before.... Cheers geese....

What are the symtoms of her running in safety mode??? Is there a rev limiter etc. ? Cheers...

there is saftey boost and extended boost. once all the saftey margins are met ie engine temp and dett etc then extended boost is enabled. So saftey boost is around 7psi and extended is 9psi thats all that happens in saftey boost.

I think the stock boost gauge hosing etc is around the brake booster right in the corner lots of little crappy hoses.

Thanks mate, I took her for a spin just before, and the speedo isn't working either, and someone has replaced the standard backlights with LED's, not very well by the looks of it, so I'm thinking they have ballsed something up on the PCB, nothing I can't fix, so I'll have a look tomorrow. By the way, it was f**king rapid, so I'm still happy regardless! :-) :-)

iirc safety boost wont allow the car to rev above a certain rpm (not sure which) and it will show an engine check light if its in.

and if your getting a code 34 then your ecu must have a safety map surely (ask andy p)

Hmmmm, good point mate... Like I said, I can't really give it the beans as It's only done about 5 miles since the re-build, but I have had it to around 5k for a moment, and no limiter, I'll keep scratching around, it's all a little weird really, but I'm starting to think it's the wires coming from the loom, as putting a 1 meg resistor in does not clear up the error code. Ah well, I'll get there in the end! Cheeeeeers... (any other advice will be lapped up guys :-)

stock sensor is by the egr solenoid i think, drivers side back od engine bay, i think its the one with the small clear tube to it, but i wait to be corrected lol.
