Hi all..

Tried to start my imported 1990 non turbo 300zx tt on Sunday but it would not fire, the engine just turned over.

Car was running fine and the only thing I did on Saturday was to change the dipped headlight bulbs, but 1 had blown again come Sunday!

Got roadside assistance out who found there was no spark from the plugs so said it was an electric problem, possibly a sensor issue but also said although unlikely, the blown bulb could have upset the immobiliser??

Has anyone else had this kinda trouble or knows where I should go to get the car looked at?

I'm from St Albans by the way and any help you be most greatfully recieved!!

Toby.

The PTU controls the sparks.

Give the connections a clean and refit them, then test for spark again.

Thanks Guys!!

I'll check I haven't bumped any other connectors, although the roadside assistance bloke did check most but I'll definately clean them all up when I next have a chance (which will prob be the weekend as it's bloody dark long time before I get home!!)

I'll post again when done to give the good or bad news.. Just wish I knew more about what's underneath the bonnet like what does what, how it works and how to fix it!!

That's what we are here for mate.

If somethings not right we will point you in the right direction and tell you how you can fix it.

With these cars it's so much cheaper once you start learning a bit about them. But it's very daunghting when you first have a problem or two.

But at the moment all you need is a little confidence and some tools, the knowledge you can get from people on here. Then in a year or two once you're learn a fair bit you'll be the one answering questions on here when new guys have problems :)

Thanks mate, I really appreciate the advice and support!!

I've always loved these cars and after getting this, my 1st one only a couple of months ago, I am totally smitten but also totally naive!!!!!!!!!!

That reminds me, I must post a pic up on the site!!

sounds ptu! had AA man out when mines went first and he was baffled:confused:

The CAS is the input for the ECU to say where in the cycle the motor is. It controls the spark (via the PTU "Power Transistor Unit" or "Amplifier") and the fuel injectors (direct control)

In that case put a screw driver to one of the injectors with your ear on the end of itwhile someone turns over the engine, if you can hear it clicking then the cas is doing its job.

when you turn the car over if you can smell fuel out of the exhaust and clicking from the injectors then the CAS is working ! if it is and you still have no spark its most likely the PTU but also bare in mind you could of blown a fuse like engine control in m,ain fuse box or fuel pump fuse in auxiliary fuse box !

Thanks for all the help guys!

Ended up having to get it garaged and £280 later for 5 hours of labour, I have my wheels back!!

They did say that the wiring is very brittle so I will have probs again but you gonna take the rough with the smooth don't ya!!

Toby

Five hours is an awful lot to fix something like that - I'd be interested in what they did.

They just said it needed alot of the wiring repaired and that it was only running on 5 cylinders..

Having only just bought it and never driven one before, I had no idea but she runs SO much better now!!

Sorry guys, my mistake.. I've just looked at the invoice and it was 4 hours labour, not 5 and the £280 does include the dreaded VAT!!
