If insured through Firebond Plc check your policy

I tried Firebond .co.uk following a recommendation from this site.

I got a quote on the net for a classic policy having declared my car as a Fairlady Z Twin Turbo. The price was £342.55.

I phoned Firebond to check the cover and again told them it was an import. They reduced the premium to just over £300 as I was a member of Z club. I gave them my credit card which was authorised and was told that the cover note would be in the post tonight.

About a half hour later I received a call from a manager saying that he had cancelled the policy as the car was an import.

After some time arguing he confirmed that as the cover note had been issued, he would send me seven days notice of cancellation. This would at least give me a few days to sort things out. I also insisted that I would only pay a pro rata share of the premium. Otherwise they charge you for a cancelation and only give you back about 90% of the premium.

All he offered me as an alternative was cover at £1600.

I suggest anybody who has an import checks their policy and gets in writing from them that they are insured.

It is a pity that when people have taken your money to provide a service they merrily go and renage on the deal.

Insurance companies will tell you that this is because parts have to come from Japan and cost more, the cars aren't always crash tested to UK standards, aren't always manufactured to UK standards etc etc.

Of course with the Z we know that UK/Japanese cars are almost identical, but that's not the case with every Japanese import, and we get tarred with the same brush.

Oh yeah - it's also a way of making more money out of us and penalising us for buying import cars instead of UK cars....

i have very recently started a policy with firebond on my uk car.

i spent a lot of time on the phone to the agent declaring mods, checking out "what ifs" etc, and making sure i knew exactly what hidden surprises might appear

i made about 4x30 min calls over about 8 days.

every time i called she asked me multiple times to confirm that i did not have an import, as she would not be able to continue the insurance (on classic terms)

also said that they would consider most mods reasonable except ecu

overall, i am happy with the way i was dealt with, but the import problem has come up multiple times on here with them, and other companies

firebond would not insure me as its a import so i went with elephant who i found really nice and helpfull as for the insurance factory they messed us about for 3 days pfft
