don't get me started on insurance companies, spent the last 2 days trying to get quotes on my import 4x4 and I swear they just make up the rules and prices by picking them out of a hat

Imports are great, aint they! have to ring everyone cause they can put the option on an on-line form:)

but what is the problem insurance companies have with imports???

but what is the problem insurance companies have with imports???

If you believe what they say, its to do with the cost of repairing your car if it has a smash. The fact that many imports are also sold in the UK as a UK model (Pajero/Shogun etc etc) and therefore are just as easy to repair doesn't seem to come into it :headvswal

Yeh, the extra cost for import is a stupid generalisation. Dates back to about 20 yrs ago, when people wouls bring over grey imports that were never available within the UK and Main dealers would not touch them and there were no independent suppliers.

Its all very different now, except the insurance companies still use it as an excuse to charge premiums - probably because an owner of an Imported vehicle is going to be an enthusiast and more willing to pay a premium for his toy.

Perhaps the clubs insurance guru at Adrian Flux would car to enlighten us on the rules and reasons for this regarding 'grey imports'. Why are they called 'grey' when as Dave states, the only difference is the name, i.e. shogun or pajero. I got a mate who imported a BMW form Germany a couple of years ago and the only concern with the insurance was that the steering wheel was on the wrong side. Definitely just a ploy to get more money from the poor owner. Come on Fluxxy, give us the truth........if you dare.

the repair bill between shoguns and pajeros are quite different due to the pajero having chrome bumpers etc which shoguns dont !

Or make the passenger pay.;)

Never really had a problem insuring my import. When I first bought I think I paid £400 fully comp and 3 years on, it's still £400. (unlimited mileage too!)

On most of our schemes the insurers who cover Import version insurer UK ones at the same sort of rates.

The main problem is that on all Jap imports there are less insurers covering them compared to the UK equivalents so it's simply a case of there's more completion out there for UK models, thus leading to lower premium.

With regards to the cost of parts, yes there will be some more popular models where repair costs etc are the same or very similar but this wouldn't always be the case.

Hope this helps,

Dan.
