Just wondered how long tubs will last when they start to smoke? and how long is it possible to carry on driving the car?

pening how long you can put up with the embarisment IN TRAFFIC unless you set there with your foot on the pedal slightly or yor financial situation.my car been of raod for year now decided to do all work myself and take on everything from virsile 2 full body kit welding andnow ready to pull engine but before exmas a big no no but its ready to be pulled. good luck chap

If you hear any 'zizzing' sounds, they are totally shot. The bearings have worn that much and the compressor and turbine blades are making contact with their housings.

Pretty much scrap turbo time.

If you don't let it get that bad then you will get away with a repair to the turbos (new bearings and thrust bearing) which will be much cheaper.

not making any noise, was smoking when idling and started doing it under hard acceleration. turn my boost controller off today which has helped for the time being

I decatted it cause there was a hole in one of them

Thats probably why the tubs are now smoking. They will go on for quite a while as they are, but the smoking will gradually get more pronounced.

how long till they cause damage, will it go into safety mode when they go properly?

Nothing will really happen as it is only the seals letting oil past. no safty mode etc

Are you sure its not condensation with the cold weather. mine looks crazy at the mo with it beaing cold.

Could be your pcv?? valves or faulty O2 sensors which mine have done at the moment :(

Faulty o2 sensors will not cause excessive white smoke. The ecu will default to rich if it cant read the o2 sensors which will give you soot on the back bumper.

Very true but he dosnt say its white, So its just another surgestion as he also says under hard acceleration which could be the O2 sensors, :)

I dont think turbos smoke under hard acceleration could be wrong??.

What colour is the smoke White Blue or black??

I have a decat with 3" pipes at at the mo it is just pure steam on tick over then when i boot it i get black due to the O2 sensors (£120 pair)

So maybe its the same as mine??

Edited by Car.Mad

and if your pipes havnt got a balance bar then the norm is smoke out of just one side norm nearside them garentee oil seals

I have read a few threads that say you cant get the tubs out without removing the engine, whys this and is it not possible if you dont mind cutting you hands to shreads?

The L/H turbo is possible with the engine in, last time it took me 5 hours to swap a turbo :)

R/H is a totally different matter :( There is lots of stuff in the way that prevent you doing it. By the time you've stripped all the stuff out you might as well take the engine out and do a plenum water bypass and an EGR removal at the same time.
