Hi

I'd love some advice being very green when it comes to any working knowledge of the large lump under the bonnet.

 

For sometime(couple of years) I've had a problem with bolts loosening up on the manifolds but I'm told by my previous garage these were too inaccessible to tighten right up but equally due to the inaccessibility they would not work completely out.

 

Well now the exhaust is realy blowing and really affecting acceleration at quite low speeds (60-80). My new garage say bolts appear to be loose on the turbos too now and because these and the manfolds bolts are impossible to get ut they need to drop the engine to have a good look.

 

Does that sound reasonable course of action to you ?

You should be able to hear the blow yourself.

 

Have the down pipes (the first section of the exhaust that comes directly off the turbo) for uprated divorced downpipes.

 

The manifolds are a nightmare to get to. I have been told that you can get to the bolts with the engine in, but im yet to have seen it myself. You can get to the bolts on the turbo down pipes without taking the engine out. I recently changed my downpipes for divorced ones, and after about 500 miles it started to blow on the drivers side. Ended up being a poor quality gasket. Changed to the cost of and hour and a halfs labour at Z-Tech in Swindon. No problems since.

if its head to manifold bolts and manifold to turbo nuts that have loosend, i would certainly pull the engine although not right out just enough to clearly see the tubs. this will allow you to get a grip on the nuts and bolts to ensure you get them nice and tight. any bolts from turbo to exhaust (anywhere along the length of pipes) can be tightend with the engine in.

Thanks both for the advice really helpful.

Seems the garage are being fairly upfront.

 

They said while it's out it'd be a good idea to check gaskets, clutch etc which sounds sensible but as I'm new to this garage and they stung me for a whopper bill for my last service/mot (welding, 4 new dampers, suspension arm, to name a few) I'm a bit concerned they may be making work for themselves.

 

Just one other thing dropping the engine, how long do you recon that should take to get in a postion to check turbos, manifold etc. And once what ever needs doing has been done how long to put back in.

for someone that knows their way round these engines, from start to seeing turbos should only be an hour of two, the whole process if comitted to the job will take a day to a day and a half.

it would be advisable to check other things like clutch, turbo gaskets, water hoses etc while the engines out, unless your 100% sure its all in good order.
