i have a packard bell easynote, the batt says it has 3 hours left when fully charged but bareley lasts an hour

are they expensive, is it worth buying a new one, or should i just throw the laptop down the stairs and claim on the insurance lol

My laptop battery didn't last a year from new and i very rarely used it, when i asked IBM support about it they said you shouldn't leave the battery installed when running off the mains, this made no sense as i said what would happen in a power cut but they said you should save your work every few minutes.....idiots!

I bought a higher spec battery on ebay for about £40, its not an origional IBM but its made by Sanyo so should be just as good i hope.

ive always just left my batt in and used it off the main, its only recently its been used without the mains as i know have wireless broadband

I also had problems with the laptop getting hot and they said leaving the battery in while powered from the mains also caused this, i ended up buying one of those fan bases you posted about a few months ago and what a difference its made.

I have been leaving the battery out, i just installed it until it was fully charged then removed it but i did notice that when i installed it the other week so i could move the laptop into the bedroom where my printer is it had dropped down to 94% so this could be the cause of the first battery failing as in my battery setup its set to re-charge when the battery falls below 95%, so the battery could be discharging every now and then and re-charging without me realising causing the cells to fail a bit like mobile phones where they tell you only to re-charge when the battery is nearly fully discharged to prolong the life.

hmm, thought the charger (mains) would only kick in when the batt was nearly flat, i do let the batt get really low now but its prob too late lol

If you open the control panel then power options you can change the battery settings but i always left mine as the factory settings as i thought this was best but who knows?

I've had a few laptops with shite batteries. The Compaq I have now though is fantastic. It'll last hours without the battery. I've had it over a year and I use it all the time.

leaving them in whilst fully charged wont damage them as such, but heat and overtime the cells will degrade, best way to test it is charge it up and bung a dvd in this will use a fair bit of power, if it last less than an hour i would consider replacing it unless you dont need the mobile facility of it.

Sometimes it's the software rather than the battery which causes the problem. If you discharge the battery completely, the the software resets itself and you may get better battery life again.

I've had my current IBM ThinkPad for 3.5 years and the battery still seems very good. It's used on mains all day, every weekday and on battery at other times. According to it's data it now only maintains 19.97 Wh of it's theoretical 47.51 Wh capacity, but it has been cycled 723 times over that period, so it's not dooing so bad. If I performed a deep cycle recharge I suspect I'd get a little if that capacity back.

Its a Thinkpad Z60M that i have and i can honestly say i only used the battery about 6-7 times. There was a recall for this model as some batteries were exploding or going on fire but IBM said the serial number for my battery was ok. I bought a 7200mAh replacement battery but i only put it in if i'm moving from room to room.

I've never had a Z series, we were all T's here. Definitely one of the best machines around. We did buy 55,000 of them !
