Just notices that the fan at the front on my engine is always on, is this normal?

Reason for asking is im trying to get to the bottom of juddering and a lumpy and even a slight misfire when its cold, ticks over beautifully now iv changed my IAA valve so its just for 3-4 mins when cold then she runs like a dream

Yes its a viscous fan it runs with the engine, and will get faster if the engine gets hotter.

i thought the viscous fan was rev-related :o when sat at idle if the temp starts to build up i just lightly throttle it and the temp comes down. albeit i have a lumpy idle and an underdrive pulley so they probably dont help

I know a lot of people take them off as they use up a bit of powe and replace them with a electric one.

viscous is engine driven, but also temp sensitive so does work harder when things are getting hotter

Yes it spins with the waterpump, so speed increases with revs. It also has a built in viscous clutch, as engine temp increases the clutch engages and the fan spins faster. It helps to maintain a more constant engine temperature and most RWD cars use them.
