I've had an idea now for quite a while about how to produce electricity from a unused source.

What would be the best thing to do?

And who would i tell without the idea being nicked? And without having to spend loads on patents.

Speak to a solicitor to get the right advice

MM but it could have been thought of before and dismissed for one reason or another. Then it would be money wasted.

If you tell anyone apart from someone professionaly involved with patents, the patent is null and void!

Yeh but i would like to know if my theory is correct or if im a mile out.

I was wondering if there was someone who takes on cases like this for a percentage (if its viable) and would be able to construct a working model?

Also they would have the marketing skills and know where to sell the idea.

As for me im just a lowly crane driver.

To get a patent is a VERY expensive process, my mates dad came up with a new design for a toilet for disabled people.

What he was advised to do was write his idea down in great detail, then mail it to himself with special delivery, once he gets it store it and the reciept in a safe place untill you take it further, that way if someone else tries to bring it out, you have proof you came up with it first :)

Have you tried googling your idea just incase someone has already come up with it?

But if all you have is a theory and you want someone else to design and make it and work out if and how it works then who would really have come up with the idea?

IT's like the invention of the time travel watch. "How does it work?", "just pop it on your wrist" !! :D

Dragons Den

LOL! whats to stop you mailing an empty envelope to yourself, then writing up all the details & specs for the new iwidgit after it comes out, then claim it was your idea cos youve got proof of posting an envelope?! :D

in fact i invented the idea of posting yourself a letter for new ideas so your mates dad owes me royalties for any money made!! i have proof!! :D :D

Find someone that you think you might be able to tell your idea to and get them to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement). That way, if they do steal your idea you can sue the ass off them. Getting a patent granted is best, though.

Because the letter would be sealed :wack:

oh, thats foolproof then!! :wack:

There is a big difference between having an idea, and having an invention. Ideas are just hyperthetical thoughts, actual inventions is when it has been tried & tested and found to work. The latter will require investment which if you do not have then you would have to find a partner to fund it. Before anyone will invest in an idea, they will need an indepth knowledge of your invention to ascertain whether it is a worthwhile project. On that basis, if it requires substantial developement to become a bonafide 'invention', your share of final product would be grately reduced because of the pre-qualification investment. you would probably end up with a 10% stake in it. If possible you should try and validate your idea on a small scale before approaching a 'speculative financier' for investment to avoid losing so much stake in the final outcome. When it is 'proven' you / they would then be able to apply for a patent which will last for 5 years.
