Brown stains!

Well thanks to Macca, halfords and homebase I fitting my Blitz Boost Controller thingy today.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE, I nearly shat myself, BUY one now. GPS do a good deal, if you use my card its FREE, sorry Johnny!

Nice one Roy wink.gif 16psi= NO BANG as long as the car has no detonation, just a fraction over safe mode Roy 14.5 psi will do fine mate.

KEEP IT SIDEWAYS;).

I have no detonation, Iain I also dont have stock intercoolers? Took the car to my mechanic friend, suspicious that I could hear nothing and valued his opinion. Confirmed all was ok, whipped off bumber to look at possible intercooler positions of new ones and low and behold, not sure who made them, but there not standard and there bigger!

Happy man today!

Can you hear detonation on a 350 brake horse power twinturbo'd V6 at full chat?

Dude, I wouldn't want Mr #6 piston to have a nasty encounter with Uncle badly-timed-explosion frown.gif isn't that what occured to John Nukem's VG30?

Roy - HKS make a dashmounted device that lights up when detonation is detected, they are fairly cheap (compared anyway to a engine rebuild wink.gif ) - I think HKSEUROPE.COM lists them.

16psi is heaven, lunched internals are hell though, have you got the fuelling mapped? give Abbey a bell - they sorted out my boost upgrade/ECU and I would happily recommend them to you smile.gif

Peace,

At that time John had stock intercoolers he had bad detonation too, stock intercoolers are on their max limit at 1 bar of boost.Let alone 1.3 bar as John was running.

True MAC but I have spoken since to SE Nissan and loads of other tuners and every one of them says to keep the boost at max 1bar unless you have internal work done to the engine. I would love to run more boost but I can;t afford another engine. And no you can't always hear detonation my engine proved that it was quite but still wipe out.

Senna - can't locate a detonation warning unit on either hks europe or hks usa web sites?

near the bottom of the page there is a Knock sensor display.

So is the standard knock sensor reliable enough to supply the correct information?

Trev

Well ive wired my id meter up to my knock sensor. Once you know the range that the knock sensor works to you can use the Blitz id meter for that very function.

You get the option on the blitz unit to wire up three extra sensors, and these can be anything you want on the sensors on the car.

The knock sensor produces a waveform. This must be processed to determine what is detonation and what is 'background noise'. The meter shown does the signal processing then gives you a display of how much detonation you are experiencing. The stock ECU will have a pre-determined level of detonation set for cutting into safety boost. One thing to remember though is this - if you have a boost controller, the only thing the ecu will be able to do when it senses detonation, is retard the timing. Since the stock boost solenoids have to be disconnected for a boost controller to work, the ecu can no longer put the car into full safety boost mode. This is why the meter is so helpfull - at full power you may not hear the detonation before its too late wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Thats cool Warren, do you have any links to the blitz ID meter ? - I fancy getting me one of those.

Do you splice it into the knock sensor wiring circuit or does it connect to the ECU and montitor for knock sensor activity?

Can you also make the ID meter make sound when it detects the signal?

Interesting stuff smile.gif

youget a harness for them and the extra sensor is well errm 800 pounds lmao.

you can make it make the warning come on ect , i havent had a chance to check this work yet but will let you know.

id meters are well spriced int he states i think.

I saw one of those detonation meters on a car at billing, think it was a skyline, but tbh it could have been anything wink.gif

I must concur with Macca on this one. 16 psi is a bit high but ok to run provided exhaust etc is sorted. If Big Roy has larger intercoolers and he is engine is sound - go for it!

As for reliability, the car is only as reliable as you drive it and the parts in it. Obviously if you turn the boost up you will be more inclined to put your foot down. This equals greater mechanical wear.

If you don't have bigger injectors and run 16psi at high revs your engine wont be getting enough fuel... I assume you have 555cc injectors?

Not enough fuel = bang.

Detination... I know it's a sign of problems, but beacuse you can't hear it, it doesn't mean it's not happening. Mild detination can't be heard (but still kills the engine). The knock sensor can't listen to the engine when running over 3500rpm, which is when stock injectors would run out of fuel.

Jez we are only talking 1.3psi,as long as your stock injectors are in good nik,I would say it will be fine.

Big intercoolers lower the charge temp and that is the main cause of detonation.

KEEP IT SIDEWAYS;).

Well, we have run it at 16 psi, with no problems, have had it running at full boost with Mercedes diagnostic equipment checking for det. and fuel mixture/supply. All OK. I trust this guy as he works in F1 so he knows engines. ECU mappings are spot on and the engines always been well looked after (shame about the bodywork!) I agree that it depends on how you drive and mechanical wear, but im not into drag races from Macdonalds, its just nice to know its there if you need it.

If it aint broke dont fix it, if it breaks, then lie to wife and hide the visa statements!!
