Hi all

 

(firstly as im sure u already know my mechanic's skills are not the best )

 

but while checking my belts today to confirm the one thats needs adjusting

 

I noticed a slight tapping noise coming from the engine , now ive not noticed this with the hood closed so hopefully that should give a idea of loudness'

 

as soon as i noticed it i tried to pin point and it seems to be coming from directly under the centre of the plastic cover over Plenums

(i know that's pretty vage):wack:

 

However the noise does increase to a degree in rate with engine rev

 

im thinking valves etc but praying it's not:bow:

 

 

any advice would be appreciated - Thanks chris

I also have a tapping/ knocking noise that is more obvious when the engine is cold and nearly silent when warm. I believe that is may be a sticky lifter / tappet. I think it is quite common with these cars at this age, especially those that aren't used as a daily runner - mine isn't.

Have you tried a good oil change and some lifter silencer?

It had a oil change about 10 months ago according to the history iv'e only had the car just over a month ,

 

but had the bonnet up a few times checking stuff and haven't really noticed it before

where as today while checking belts it was an obvious tick

 

could be nothing as there's no smoke and the car drives's fine

 

As ive relised though most garage's round me wont touch em' , and nissan just qoute'd me over 500 for a alt belt change so i dont think i'll be getting them to check it !

this is scheduled for thursday next week thankfully ! ive ordered 5/40w as reccomended ?

the noise isn't noticable at all while driving , so as i say could just be me being slightly paranoid

Mmhhh that sounds a bit better thanks m8 i suggested 10w/40w and was told --NO suppose depends on the age?

I have that sound of tapping too, I am not a mechanic either, but I have heard it before on other cars and people have said it is the tappets. Are these easily adjustable on our Zeds................errr do we have such things lol.

 

PS What is lifter silencer???? never heard of that.

nice 2 know im not alone then ;) and i would have said tappets if it where a average car lol -hence the post

 

will have to see if any better after oil/filter change.

There im sure loads of threads about which oils are best to use,i would always use 1040 because the cars not new and depending on if its an everyday car as well,if thed cars a weekend job even more reason to use thicker oil as for your ticking your find once started from cold let it tick over a min as soon as engine hae warmed up and your tick will have gone,oh and make sure the correct amount is in do your dip stick in morning when engine is cold hope this helps

thanks m8 im gonna monitor it over the next few days and get the oil and filter changed as soon as 10w/40 sound like a plan:rolleyes:

Noise in the area described can be the result of either a noisy lifter, noisy cam bearing or and the most likely a noise cambelt pulley ( top one )

 

Noise diagnostic is by its nature can be difficult especially as one persons idea of tapping can be another persons idea of knocking, the two are very different.

 

So based on my own view on it, if the noise is a light half engine speed tap its most likely a lifter, if however it is a heavy knock at half engine speed it could be a cam bearing and finally a full engine speed knock which is worse when cold that gets less sever when warm is more likely to be the top cambelt pulley.

 

Before you commit to any repair you need to determine what the precise cause of the noise is, or you could be throwing cash at it, also any good brand 10w40 semi synth oil will be ok, 3k to 4k oil change dependant upon your driving style and journey lengths really means fully synth is not always compulsory.

iv'e just been out to fill up and had a good listen and could bearly hear it from the level it was before ,and couldnt hear it in the car at all which i never have anyway and the car drove fine all the way

 

even listened again once fully warm nothing!! but im certainly gonna monitor it and get the oil change done pronto

This happens to me on a regular basis as i leave the car standing for a week or more at a time. Overtime the oil drains from the heads and when i first start it up its got a light consistent tapping, take it out for a run and it should clear up to the normal running.

 

Worried the crap out of me the first time!!!
