last 2 days, ive gone for short drives.

each time started, took 2 goes to start (usually fires first time)

when started, smelt bit petrolly (dont know if thats coz id been pressing the gas pedal)

when started was a bit lumpy, and idle was hunting. but each time after the car drove cleared up and was fine.

today coming home, accelarator was a bit boggy, then as was parking heard a whinning noise coming from the back of the car?

turnd off the car. tried starting back up, and it wont fire.

when i turn the ignition on, sometimes can hear the fuel pump whine for 2 seconds (as normal) and sometimes i turn the ignition on and it doesnt make a sound?

but sound or not it wont start :(

this a dead fuel pump? or something else related?

Take a look at the temp sensor at the front of the engine, the connection can become poor or disconnected and will cause an overfueling problem, this in turn can lead to flooding and the situation you find yourself in.

The sensor is located on the front / centre of the engine on the alloy water pipe, in fact there are two sensors but you need to be checking the larger left hand one. Remove the connection and clean it with a sharp knife and WD40 or similar, then make sure it is tight.

As it is likely the engine is flooded you need to deal with that next, locate the fuel pump fuse in the small slim black fuse box on the drivers side under the bonnet close to the brake booster, it is the green fuse closest to the engine, remove this and then with the accelerator fully depresed crank the engine for 5 to 10 seconds, pause for a few seconds and then crank it again for 5 to 10 seconds. Switch off the ignition and replace the fuse, now restart the engine but do not touch the accelerator until the engine is running.

This is a very common problem so do not worry to much, some times best when you have more time is to work through many of the sensor connectors and clean them to avoid problems in the future.

Hope that helps

thanks mate,

il give it a go when its light, or maybe tomo after work.

i dont think it is the fuel pump itself, as when i turn the ignition on, you can hear it prime everytime.

i would agree with the flooding possibility, and the fact it could have been overfueling,

as it smells of petrol, and was boggy.

so give the thing a clean yea?

is that the PTU??

The ptu is mounted on the front of the left hand cam cover, square and got 2 plugs going to it....

No the temperature sensor.

Fixed!

took the intercooler pipes off, so coulf get at the PTU.

thn jamed the throttle open, so the petrol could get out (smely quote a bit, so overfuelled)

cleaned the 2x PTU connectors (had loads of green mould on them!) scraped woff with a knife, then wire wool, then sprayed WD40 and kitchin rolled them clean.

the 2x Temp sensor & CAS connectors were clean tho, gave them the same treatment tho to make sure.

took the fuel pump fuse out, turned the car over twice, then put the fuse back in, fires straight away!

thanks a lot guys! i bet if i gave it to a garage they wouldnt have known!
