autobox problem

Recommended Posts

i know since you all read there is a problem with my autobox that im going to get loads of replies of just convert it. but really not got the money for that so hoping (although i prob know the answer) its just something simple. for the past few days the car wont go into 3rd gear when it tries to go into 3rd if u let the foot of the accelerator the revs will go right down then the engine cuts out. i checked the dipstick for gear oil (drivers side rear of engine am i right?) and it says its ok however it does look a little brown and i think its meant to be redish pink? and there are no shiny metal shavings or that in it. i ran the auto diagnostics last night and showed no error, reset the ecu aswell and it didnt change anything. its going up to my mechanic tomorrow for him to have a look just wondering if anyone here can answer it?

also if it is the box what would the average price of getting it converted to a manual? and what would the average price of getting another auto fitted?

think thats me done now lol

I'm afraid I have to agree. Mines done the same for no reason. Behaves sort of OK until warm then won't go into 3/4th. My oil was also browny. I dropped the sump to find lots of metal particles on the magnet. I cleaned it all out, fitted new filter (although TBH old filter is OK) and fitted new gasket & oil. Alas still the bloody same.

Still not sure what to do keep it, manual conversion or buy another?

Trouble is it's a slick top TT with genuine 56K miles.

You've answered that question. Why by another which can sometimes be an unknown quantity when you have a seemingly good and rare car. Manual conversion is the way to go, afterall, you'll loose money selling the car as it is, so no point selling really. :)

Its fried dude, you can try dropping the gearbox sump, draining the oil, cleaning the filters and putting back together with fresh but IMHO your wasting your time, its a classic fault that there is no return from on these boxes.

I have to agree.

Mine finally went this year; it "lost" 2nd and 4th gears. My oil was still a healthy pink with no smell, so if your oil is brown-ish then I reckon the 'box is dead.

You can buy a 2nd hand one for a couple of hundred pounds but you could be unlucky and that one may not last, leaving you with the same problem a bit further down the road.

A manual conversion will cost around £1500 all in.

I had mine fully re-built by one of the best auto box specialists in the south east. He also replced the torque convertor; that cost me £1200 all in with an 18 month/18k mile warranty. This guy is good though - he's been in business for years and came highly recommended by another member on here.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I still have it, it was a Jap box on an 80k car, the oil was pink and there were no problems with it. The standard engine went and I am fitting a new one and aiming for 500bhp so an auto is no good for me otherwise I would of kept it.

Price is £200 + shipping or can be collected from Luton or Cardiff
