Hey all I am renewing my insurance next week and i have run into a bit of a problem, for the last few years i have been with A-Plan who have been great up until this years renewal which was £523.00, £73 more than last year so i contacted them and they just will not budge on the price, so i have done a bit of hunting around on various comparison websites there were a few competitive quotes but esure have come out top with a price of £343.32. Now this is where the problem starts on the moneysupermarket site they didn't have the Z32 on a 1989 only on a 1990 the earliest so that is the one i used for the quote, My Z is a jap import and on a 1989 F registration plate. ok so i decide to phone esure to go through all the details and take out the policy. While speaking to esure they ask me if it is a jap import and i say yes and explain the correct year for my car was not on their website so she phones the underwriter to check and comes back with WE DON'T INSURE IMPORTS, ok so i say well your website says you do, here is what it says:

#2. Can I cover a personally imported car?

Yes, but only if the car is, or has been, available as a standard production model in the United Kingdom and has a United Kingdom registration number.

Now this Is where the call ended after she said the website was wrong and it shouldn't say for imports.

Now my questions/queries are,

1. Am i correct in thinking that from that statement #2 that they DO insure imports if the car is, or has been, available as a standard production model in the United Kingdom and has a United Kingdom registration number.?

2. And if they do are they saying that they cant insure my 1989 Z because their system only sees 1990-1994 Z's.?

3. If the answer to Q2 is YES then how can i prove to them that the Z32 was infact introduced as a standard production model in the United Kingdom in 1989.? and that they should be able to cover me.?

Any help would be great and much appreciated also if anybody is insured with esure/sainsburys/halifax/bank of scotland/Sheilas' Wheels they are all the same. and can give any advice here......Cheers Jay

Esure is too "mainstream" and most probably will not insure imports. The "personal imports" they refer to will be cars that individuals have purchased new from other contries in Europe; a few years back, it was a lot cheaper to go to Holland or Germany and buy a brand new car.

I guess they do not show the 300zx turbo pre-1990 because 1990 was the first year it was sold here in the UK. Spring 1990 I believe; G reg is the oldest UK spec car you will find.

You will have to try the more specialist insurers to cover an import; Adrian Flux; Lifesure; Houghtons etc etc.

Well you were both right, lol. I have now reinsured with Sky insurance, Underwritten by Chaucer, A not bad price too £471 Fully comp all mods declared, like for like replacement, £250 excess, 6k limited miles...and drive any other vehicle if it's covered on another policy. so Im quite happy even though it's slightly more than last year.....
