MY Z's TOOOOOOOO SLOW!!!

hi fellas, hope u guys had a wicked time at trax (the people that went!!).

guys i left a Vectra at the lights and couldnt really be bothered to carry on pushin it so i eased off the throttle. but as the guy started comin closer i put my foot down (bout 80-90ish) and i couldnt get away!! he was about 2 car lengths away but still frown.gif

think his was a 24valve'r or somin maybe v6?? but we're talkin about a 300 here!!!

mines an auto as some u guys might know. i fixed all the tiny little bits and bobs....and was def not in safety boost....

ive alway thought it was slow top end, just a little faster then an average motor?!?

any suggestions pleeeeease!!

cheers jaz

sometimes i feel the same with my z, and the kick downs aint jus dont happen at that speed. that y i have to start moddin. cant wait for delivery of my new exhaust system. lookin for air filter next

Switch overdrive to OFF and kickdown. Not much will stay with you at 80/90 my friend.

nelson, i didnt try that in this instance but have done in the past...not much in it. have to say im very dissapointed with the autos!

what do you reckon?

jaz

Swap the auto box for a manual?

or am I not meant to start this debate again?!?!?? biggrin.gif

if i had any cash left i would! but i spent it on getting the damn box recond!!l lol

Or buy my UK Manual nice and cheap smile.gif

simple answer to this problem:

install HKS airfilter, straight through exhaust, JWT chip and most importantly a boost controller. then run at 1bar boost and watch the vectra disappear up his own arsehole as you suck him up your exhaust pipes and spit him out! biggrin.gif

Hi all, cant understand why jaz has such a slowish zed!,mines only got a de-cat system, all else stock with restricter still in place, and it goes like hell, nothing as yet got even close when i open her up,i wonder if its the fuel you all on,how many of you are runnin cats, could be that they are on the way out,you would be amazed at how they can restrict power when they are nearly shot,.Just seems strange to me!.

A well maintained autobox (gbox oil changes 6 monthly) will definately kickdown above 80mph and has loads of power left above 120mph. It should not just accelerate slowly with the foot to the floor over 120mph you should be being pushed into the boot space and if it is not doing this then you have got a problem somewhere. I have found on mine that I have to remember that once I get past 130/140mph to re-engage the overdrive to keep accelerating more otherwise it will feel slow to keep going above that speed.

Maybe it wasn't a standard Vectra?

I went down to Trax with PaulG and Macca and we left a Cavalier and Calibra at 155mph on the A1 (167mph see Macca's Blitz ID meter on another post as proof!) but they were bloody quick.

Bumped into the guys at the show and found out the cavalier had superchargers and 350bhp! biggrin.gif

i dont know what to do lads, really frustrating!

wild turkey, sounds really good but still need my motor running opt standard...

TonyC, you driving a manual?? i think the vectra was most prob standard...

john, any tips mate? could a faulty overdrive switch limit me power?? how could i check...

Drive at say a steady 50/60 mph, push O/D button(yellow light illuminates on the dash) and watch the rev counter needle...it should rise as soon as you push the button. Engine note changes with the sudden gear change.

Floor it...box shouldn't change and the rev counter needle will head towards the red line.

Push O/D button to change up when you feel like it! wink.gif

If none of the above is happening it ain't working!

P.S. O/D should change the car from being the mild mannered janitor into Hong Kong Phooey on acid!!! biggrin.gif

KEEP IT SIDEWAYS;).

lol tim, i think my overdrive switch is playing up, when driving on the motorway it jumps up and down gears eratically.. (only sometimes) but it sounds like what u described about o/d.....

wow, mac how much would a set up like that cost me? boost control etc!!!

Jaz,mines an auto,i use mine similar to what Timmy_Turbo mentioned, try it that way ,see what its like.

ummm, not sure that it is just a faulty o/d switch, if it changes erratically that could be something like a solenoid inside the box failing to control the pressure so that it cant make its mind up which gear to be in. Suggest doing an autobox diagnostic or adding an HKS ALC to make the pressure more solid/stable ..... that sounded a little too technical for my mechanical knowledge. Anyone who is really technical out there (ADuff/Craig) able to either justify or discredit what I just said?

After careful consideration and research on the problem I have come to the following conclusion.....

IT'S THE VERTICAL PEDAL ON THE RIGHT !!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding wink.gif

Mike

A vectra?! and there was me worrying a while ago about keeping M3's at bay! smile.gif

Mine's a stock auto, have to admit with overdrive off and the switch at power, I generally say bye bye to everything.. including my licence smile.gif ha ha

LMFAO biggrin.gif

You guys think that just because you've got a 3 litre V6 with two hairdryers on that you will just walk the competition everytime???

Face reality will ya! Yes, a Vectra!

Right how many different types of Vectra are there???

Was it an SRi??? If it was a GSi yes you might struggle to get away from it!

There are other rapid motors out there you know...not just us. ROFL biggrin.gif

Just watching some of the 0-60 times at Trax(accurate or not) shows you that we don't have a massive gap of advantage over other car drivers.

As Wild Turkey(Steve) said zorst, intake, chip and crank that boost to 1 bar and that will make the challenge more one sided in your favour against most things out there! wink.gif

lol mike!!! silly me, i think i had the pedal on the left pressed at the same time wink.gif....

seriously fellas, just did another test drive the o/d switch definately works.. the revs inrease, gears drop etc.... but the power is def not there..

put my foot down and the revs hit 5-6tho the car screams along but lacks that push from the back!!

guys, if for instance one injector was faulty, loss of a cylndr... would that be easily detected cos i got this motor in this condition so im thinkin of other internal probs it might have..???

not much of a mech, so if what ive said sounds like shite please ignore! smile.gif

cheers jaz

If the car is "chugging" like a lorry at tickover then you might have a cylinder down.

I know the stock boost gauge isn't fantastic but what are you reading?

You should be getting around the 9 PSI mark.

Any smoke from the ar$e end when you cain it?

Do an ECU diag to check for error codes.

hi tim,

idle is i little messy but def not like that, ive got shite plugs which i think are the cause... cleaned the throttle B's

yep, bout 9psi

i dont think i get any visable smoke but after cleaning my tails they soon build up soot??

and def NO error codes...
