Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know peoples opinions on resprays. What sort of quality do you expect from a bodyshop. I realise it's never going to be as good as factory but what would you be happy with?

Mines in pearl white and I know imperfections show through more in a pearl and obviously can only be flattened so much but I found quite a few marks still on the car but it's still got to be polished so I didn't say anything............

Cheers

Vijay

Cheers guys. I already know what they'll say and that's that the car needed so much prep work on each panel which to me is just an excuse. Quite surprise as they've done some nice cars in there, seen a Ferarri, Maserati, E type, 2 old Ford Mustangs so they obviously do some high end cars. In my mind the job should be the same no matter what car it is.

you paid them to do a job. they took teh money. the job your looking for is a profesional job. if it has any imperfections in any way, they fix it. you wouldnt except scratch marks on a new car would you, i certainly wouldnt.

Yep, for 4k it ought to be immaculate concours standard. Doesn't have to be expensive either, my mechanic uses a place run by some immigrants who supposedly used to work for Ferrari in Dubai or something, don't know how true that is though :p Anyway he showed me around his missus' FTO which they have done a full respray on and it was totally mint, flawless finish. This was actually a 3 stage flip paint too, all door jams and everything except engine bay was done for just 700. Mine will be going there at some point.

^^ have you got their number? Always useful to keep a good sprayers number on file ;)

dude 4k is alot of money, only accept a top notch job, 4k isnt a budget price

Definately!

I am looking at getting mine resprayed over the winter. I asked a local respected 'shop I pass on the way to work and the owner reckons it would cost about £3k, including fixing the rust coming through on the OSR wheel arch.

So for £4k I would expect perfection.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Just found out that the new bodyshop have charged the old one £4.5 to do my car :O There was a lot of fillerwork and making good on panels but that's a lot of dough!!!!

Not good news I'm afriad. I went and looked at the car cos I was told it was finished to find them still working on it. I didn't even have to look at the whole car as just the passanger side is a mess. There are marks in the paint, pinholes, places where they haven't stoppered it and they were putting it back together.

I told them I wouldn't accept the car as there are marks everywhere and their response was that I was being way too fussy and compared to how the car was when it came to them, that I should be happy. They moaned that they've made a loss on the job and that no aftermarket respray would be perfect with no marks and they would not respray it again. I don't exactly have a problem with that as I don't think they're capable of doing it! Glad to say I kept calm and didn't even raise my voice cos there really was no point (even though I'm pretty livid about their attitude) but I kept asking for the reason why there were marks and specs of crap in the paint only to be told it was cos the car has surface rust :wack:

Don't exactly know where I go from here as I don't know what money has exchanged hands but all I know is I want my car out of there. I'm so fed up with so called proffesionals who are happy to give back a job that so obviously isn't right. Why should I have to point out inperfections if they know what they're doing :headvswal

Dont know how you stand here as it is not "you" paying for the job?

I would not collect the car and bring in trading standards and lawyers to get the car in the condition expected. If you take the car away you have effectivly accepted the workmanship, so leave it where it is! Even get in writing you wont take the car away because you are not happy with the work and make them sign it.

A really good body shops work will be superior to a fatory finish. As I keep Pushing them Wrexham Autokraft is run buy my mate Lee who is a time served pannel better and paint spayer.

I was once at his place (when having my blue car Painted originally) and a lady came in with a brand spanking new SLK 600 The first ones with the McClaren nose and the folding hard top. The drivers Door was compress to about 3/4 the length it should be and was held shut with bungee straps. She'd been reversing down the side of the house with the door partly open to see how close she was lol. She asked how long to get it fixed.

He rang Merc and they said because the car was a brand new model it would be 10 weeks befor they could get the part. She told him she knew that as dhe'd already enquired. But she had to have it done before her husband got back from a business trip.

She said if he could fix it in a week she's pay him what ever he quoted + a thousand pounds as a cash gift. He beat and reshapped the metal and skimmed the repairs and repainted it in 2 days. You couldn't tell it had ever been damaged othe than He couldn't saurse new glass.

If the paint work is not good he will warn you that his work will show the rest of the car up and it does. If it is not right, such as pimples etc, it will be restrippd and redone before it leaves his shop. He has repared my now Ex;s cars countles times and it has always been undetectable even with pearls. There are too many crap body shops out there charging top prices and giving out poor work.

fookin ell bud, i cant understand garages at times, you have offered them cash for a job, why the fook are they fookin you about, and then for another garage to be charging 4.5k and to turn out a shit job is ridicoulos, id leave the car where it is, they have an obligation to make sure the car is secure at nites, then ring trading standards immediately, and go and see a solicitor, get some advice from people that know everything about this type of thing

boils my fookin piss

I've left it to the 2 garages to sort out as as of now, no money has swapped hands between the 2 of them. To be honest, I'd prefer my car to go somewhere that have a bit more pride in their work and not be happy to give somone's car back with marks. I'll see what they have to say by tomorrow but if they refuse to do it again PROPERLY I don't see why the first garage should pay them.

I really don't like the idea of my car being left there though but won't remove it untill I've got legal advice. Do I just go and see a normal solicitor or do they specialise in this sort of thing?

Cheers guys,

Vijay

look throught the yellow pages and find a solicitor that deals in this sort of thing, although all should be able to help

I just can't believe people! Just spoke to one of the partners at the first garage and he went and looked at my car. In his opinion I'm being fussy and you can only notice the marks if you look and there are only a few marks here and there. He also said I should compare it to how it was when they brought it there! lol They're all having a meeting tomorrow to decide what they intend to do but the fact they all think I'm being fussy and are comparing the job to when they took it on suggests they're not gonna play ball. I can't believe they're happy paying £4.5K for a job with marks every where but that's their problem!

Looks like it may have to go down the legal route :(

some body shops if you pay them will have someone that will come along with you, go out of town (so there is no chance of them knowing each other) and find someone to attend the next viewing with you

I don't think I'm going to view the car again. If they agree that the car is to a good standard I think the next step is to get in an independant accesor to look at the car and based on his/her opinion will depends where I'll go. Think the way to go might be small claims court as that's up to £5K.

Guess it depends on what they agree tomorrow..............................

gutted that you're being messed around again!

name and shame ...

Come on then Clarkey - any contact details? I'm looking at getting mine done when finances allow :)

lol, Stella that'd be enough to scare anyone!

I'm waiting on a call today as they promised and I'm also writing down everything that's said so if it goes to court I have details of everything. Somehow I don't think I'll get a call so I'll call them tomorrow and tell them they have till the end of the week to decide. If they don't sort it, thinks will be done in writing and I will explain my intentions. Enough is enough!

Having read all this, my utmost commiserations on the bad job - bl**dy annoying to say the very least !

SO...how about a sticky that has details of GOOD companies and BAD companies. I'm sure there must be others who want a good paint job done (either voluntary of forced).
