can any of you guys help. As some of you know, I sold my z to a member on here richardgills some weeks ago. I am posting this to try and help. Basically after the manual conversion was done last september, the idling/tick over is too high, around 2000rpm. I never got it sorted because I presumed it was something simple. richard has been banging his head off the wall to try and sort it with no luck as yet. Please please help someone, I want to know my baby is being enjoyed and driven by someone, not holed up in a garage for the next year.:(

Hi Mick, its usually because the neutral feed from the old auto box may not be connected, otherwise the ecu will be reading the pulses as though it still has an auto box.

 

Actually ive not explained very well, after all its 6am and not been to bed yet, but if you do a search on auto to manual conversion and look at twinturbo.net, there is an explanation.

Neutral switch not been connected will not cause the high idle only a 25 deg timing reading.

The high idle can be caused by the cold run part of the aux air valve stuck open/ bad connection or the closed throttle on the tps not made due to incorrect setting or a bad connection, even an air leak/ throttle imbalance can cause the same issue.

In normal circumstances yes, but in an auto box to manual box conversion It will cause a high idle as the ecu will be reading the voltage incorrectly ie: when in gear on an auto the voltage is regulated to keep the car ticking over, when placed in neutral it compensates to stop too high tickover. If the neutral switch hasnt been connected or grounded, the ecu thinks that its in gear and therefore will run at higher revs.

I beg to differ Graham, when an auto to manual conversion is done without connecting the neutral swith but still using an auto engine ecu, it will not give high idle due to the ecu not been able to communicate with the now missing autobox, infact it will place a fault code in the engine ecu fault codes to this effect, as it can no longer "see" the box it will make no attempt to raise the revs because of the missing neutral switch, it only raises the expected timing ( via Consult ) to 25deg but in fact the engine is still dynamically at 15deg also the auto box ecu defaults to fail too for the same reason and hence will not communicate with the engine ecu.

hi folks well its my car chewie is on about. ( his old car ) and today i pluged in my conzult and it gave an option for active test. when i pressed it it then gave me an option to adjust base idle ( press start ), when i did this the idle dropped down to 800, this only lasted until i unpluged the conzult wire, when then again it returned to 2000rpm. now other thing i noticed today was i fiddled with the aacv conection and the idle jumped as if the connection was faulty so i am gonna check that tomorrow. if anyone has a pic of the ecu for me to ground the pin 44 i would appreciate it alot. And once again many THANKS for your help i really want to drive it and its killin me being parked up all the gtime.

don't know if this is any good to you

check ur throttle pot settings as this can also cause high idle,

i am gonna try ground no. 44 pin on ecu in a final bid to get to mondello on Sunday. also gonna replace the conectios on aacv and clean again the other connections.

seems he grounded pin .44 on the ECU as he mentioned, that seemed to do the trick, im sure he'll come back on to explain it properly

the advanced timing will cause the high idle as he found out , in reality a good iacv valve can cope with this and drag the idle down, its not a great scenario but it happens

i tried to clean aacv but no good so all i did was remove ecu locate pin 44 grounded it and it seemed to work. gonna drive it alot now just to make sure all is ok. thanks for all your help.
