Hi all,

Just thinking a little ahead here.

Car will be done very soon after having the engine completely rebuilt etc. I believe Phil will give me advise/instructions on running in my engine (Mark said thats what he did with him anyway).

Im just wondering what the best way to run it in is, also how long does it take etc etc?

Any advise greatly appreciated

you have about twenty minutes of running in to get it right, there was a old thread here that explained it , but load it quickly to enable the rings to seal properly otherwise the rings will not seal properly

i think thats the honing your talking about? 20 miles i thought? and any good rebuilder or mechanic person should always run it in for the first inital 20 miles so its done properly. Then it can be driving softly till everything has loosend up.

interesting read, there are alot of different opinons on this, id personaly go with thrasjing it on the inital first 20 mins or so :D get them rings sealed up.

Mine got 7 miles to make sure nothing was going to drop off, jump off, then it was off to jae and normal driving, everything is running on a film of oil, if its not then your engines going to break any way, only things that need to bed in are the piston rings.

Some people prefer to do a ritual and run them in over hundreds of miles, its your engine, use the force and search your feelings to find what's right for you.

:)

the only problem there tho is if i do whats right for me and it wasn't whats right for the engine/car then i could find myself having spent thousands and be back in the same position if that makes sense

Make sure the initial oil is a good mineral oil which will allow the rings and bearings to wear in right to match their rubbing surfaces, then after about 500 miles do an oil change and use a quality synthetic oil to protect all the surfaces. The standard of machining / engineering and materials are so good today that 'running in' as it used to be referred to years ago is no longer neceassary.

Provided the bearings have been soaked in an oil bath before being built then this might be true....You can't beat the best of both worlds and apply some 'old school' thinking now and again in my opinion...

wow, there is a lot of different opinions on this sort of thing isn't there.

I liked one of the replies in the thread that was posted earlier saying if the engine is built correctly then it doesn't matter how you drive it lol

the way my dad does it is the first minute of the engine start up is the most inportant so rev upto 4-5000 revs for the first minute or so of start up to bed in the rings then run to 3000 revs for 300 miles then oil change, then 4000 revs for 300 miles and oild change then 5000 revs and another oil change then full map and away you go

we have done this several times and its never gone wrong yet :)

Bird. Stop asking people what tehir oppinion on this is and FOLLOW teh instructions of the fella who is building the engine. If it goes wrong and you follow his advice you have recourse, if you follow someone elses then you dont.

I will follow his advise, im just curios how others do it aat the minute to be honest.

Completely trust my engine builder with everything. Very good and honest guy!

what he said:D

I was told by a good source this:

going by whatever your engine red lines at on the rev clock and using that proportion below the red line:

For the first 500 miles more or less no more than a quarter of the revs;

For the next 500 miles more or less no more than half of the revs:

Then the engine should be run in OK. It shouldn't take much over 1000 miles to run in.

the amount my car gets used it woould take 2 years to run it in

the amount my car gets used it woould take 2 years to run it in

Mine still isnt :rofl::rofl:

I would have to agree with deve8uk on this one.

There are many views on how to run an engine in, but at the end of the day the guy that builds your engine will tell you how to run it in.

If he says keep under 4k rpm for the first 500 miles and you go out and hit max boost at 7500rpm 5 miles later and something breaks, he's not gonna fix it for you.

Stick to what your individual builder tells you and you are covered if something breaks.
