I've had my car back for a couple of weeks now and TBH not driven it much as it has had a lot of work done recently.

Today i have finished fitting my new suspension and brakes and i was driving it back from my friends and when i was nearly home the revs went upto 2000rpm and would'nt come back down, which was quite un-nerving! And then when i pulled over and put it in neutral it idled at 2500rpm! It did this the other day when i took it for a quick run round the block after its MOT. All of a sudden it was going along at 2000rpm and would'nt come back down!

When i pull over and rev the accelerator hard it comes back down to just under 1000rpm.

Also every now and again when i come to a stop at a junction etc.... it gets close to cutting out or actually does cut out

What is causing these problems? In simple terms please :wack: Is there anything i can do or check???

Think the PTU causes this or maybe your idle control valve mate

Just fitted an S2 PTU. :)

Where is the idle control valve? Can i adjust it myself?

You could try cleaning the ICV, you dont want to adjust it as it will be at the same position as it was when it was fine. so the problem is else where

This can be found at the right hand side of the engine on the back of the plenum

Have you had any work done to the engine?? Maybe the throttle position has changed

Im not sure how you can adjust it!

But it is located at the back of the plenum on the right handside i think:o

Yep just got it back after some work done my duffers, he had the plenum off and rocker covers.

I'll try finding it and then try and give it a clean, thanks Dave :)

defo IACV mate just unplug it and see what happens

What usually happens when it is unplugged?

  • Author
Id say it'll probably try and sit at base idle??? About 675rpm isnt it?

So once i've unplugged it and if it does do what you think, do i just clean the connector and see what happens or do i do anything other that that?

well the valve might be sticking or full of crap, or maybe its gone knackered. Im not sure really, i understand what it does i think, but now how it works! lol

Thanks for the help Chris, appreciate it bud :)

Just had a quick look under the bonnet and realised the right hand side back of the plenum has LOADS of stuff tucked away there :( Has anyone got a pic of what i am looking for or a good description???

Cheers.

Before you fiddle with owt that could make it worse mate, the link posted above to Legrath's old thread, is actually a very common problem.

So whilst your tinkering around, simply lift the accelerator linkage back with your fingers or screwdriver and see if it comes any where near the 2 breather pipes pictured OR wiggle the pipes in your fingers, if they move easy, thats highly probable what it is. Oh and easily fixed with a wee bit of silicone.

Thanks Paul, i will try that first mate. :) Always try the simple stuff first ;) Its what my dad always says!

mine has done this several times before, but not alot, its very wierd i find if you sit on the brake in drive it stops and goes away, and it goes away for a very long time when you clean the TPS connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.

Very odd

I am going to try what znut and smithy suggested first and then move onto that. I still need to know what i am looking for though

Right one problem down :nana2:

The breather pipes had worked their way out and on the passenger side one you can actually see where the throttle body has scratched against the pipe!!! Anyway i have put plenty of loctite on them and lightly hit them in with a hammer as far as they will go and they are well in there now. I then took it for a drive and that has sorted it!

Thanks to znut and Smithy for pointing me in the right direction and Legrath for the original post!  Also thanks to everyone else for the help so far.....

Next problem, it stalling when i come to a stop! I have take the pipe of the ICV and squirted loads of carb cleaner in there TWICE! But it still nearly stalls when i come to a stop :( Do i need to drive the car for quite a few miles for it to work its way through or what???

Cheers,

Isaac :)

BUMP

Anyone know if carb cleaner needs time to work its way through, or if it should of worked instantanious???

Cheers,

Isaac :)

Same problem here Isaac - had it for ages and never yet found a fix - I've just had to learn to heel & toe it to stop it from dying!

The only thing that I can think of is replacing the ICV, but not got round to it yet. Let me know if you do happen to find a fix and I'll do the same :)

Try adjusting base idle and TPS? do a search in the FAQ for how to and pics..
