HELP

I've had my car resprayed - full bumper off, window out jobbie.

The rear bumper before being refitted started to show stretch marks in the paint, even more so when fitted to the car. The body shop confirmed they'd had problems with it and had ended up spraying it twice. Anyway they chose to try again on another bumper (supplied by me) - it seemed to work ok this time but now i've got it home (not yet fitted to car) i can see stretch marks appearing again

The rear bumpers are incredibly bendy compared to the front and I wonder if the paint simply isn't able to stretch with it hence the marks. I'm wondering if a solution is to have it sprayed whilst fitted to the car.

Has anyone else had any problems like this, did people leave their bumpers on the car for a respray?

It's strarting to drive me nuts. The respray wasn't cheap - but I can't blame the bodyshop as they've made no quibble attemps to rectify it and are as much in the dark as I.

Any ideas?

They may not have added a flexable paint promoter,( not sure of exact name) which is needed for poly and fibre glass bumpers to be flexable with the body panel, so the paint doesnt crack or stretch, i had that done to mine for an extra £50 and have had no problems at all.

The bumpers on the Z don't have much in the way of structural rigidity as they are just skins as opposed to rigid bumpers. Similar things happen to the OEM foam composite rear spoilers on the 89-94 cars.

I think a higher than normal amount of plasticizer is needed on these types of non-rigid bumpers.

Cheers - i'll check with them - was your bumper sprayed on or off the car?

Phil

Plasticizer, thats the stuff lol

It was sprayed off the car, sat in my garage for months then i put it on a couple of weeks ago and no problems, its a 99 spec, so is not fibreglass like some aftermarket ones so although more rigid still can bend when off the car.

I've also got a 99spec front - had no problems with that. The rear bumper is like paper in comparison.

I will be honest my back bumper needs doing badly as it has a few bubbles coming up and some flaking paint, which leads me to the conclusion that the previous owner hadnt had it done properly when the car was painted.

Im sure that when the rear bumper is off the car the strengthening braces are left on the car, which leaves you with the thinner shell of the rear bumper to contend with, it might be worth either bracing up the bumper, spraying it then fitting the whole item to the car or getting it resprayed when its back on the car, after all, the edges and nooks will have been done during the previous effort.

Rear bumpers are 1/3 bigger than the size of the front bumpers and have less support. The lower half especially. You have a multiude of rivets and reversed mouldings holding the front bumper to the splash tray. The rear bumper is deep, has no real shape to the lower half meaning the skin has little 'mechanical strength'. The lower half of the rear bumper is just secured by long trim tabs that fix to the body via expanding rivets. Just one of those things I'm afraid.

There's not really any room for adding support where it's needed.
