Ive got a silly notion in my head about perhaps looking to get a TVR Cerbera sometime in the future.

Has anyone had one or had any experience of them, depending on who you speak to they are either the best thing ever or unreliable and need an engine rebuild ever 200 miles!

Anyone got any advice?

Featured Replies

looked at them before i went for the Griff, had a chat with the owner of hexham horseless carraiges and he gave me a bit of an eye opener for if things were to go wrong!

lovely looking cars but id be wary of engine rebuilds and even he general cost of service.

brakedust on here has one i think, maybe drop him a pm or have a look in he relevent PH forum for owners advice

I know Glenn is after one, might be worth having a chat with him as he's already done a bit of research.

aye ive seen some horrific bills, thing is i dont really use my car as ive got a company van so its not like im putting loads of miles on it or anything.

Yeah Nick i was going to ask you about your experience with yours. Im unsure as wether to go for a Cerb (obv with a tvr engine) or look at the rover engined ones... hmm!

I dunno, i'll probably never get one but ive got a real hankering for one. Its the interior more than anything, i just think its a fabulous work of art!

I looked at the TVR OC, although they want £50 of me before i even ask a couple of questions!

will gladly take you for a spin if/when mine comes back!

i suppose its like anything - you pay your money u take your chances, could end up with a minter or a dog!

i bought mine for the sound!

oh boy! when i went for a look around her the owner started her up and that was me sold!

sounds sensational.

dont think the interior on the griffith is anyting spectacular unlike the tuscan/cerbera.

everything is just where you need it though.

steering is razor sharp

clutch weighs a ton!

impossible to drive happily round town, but mine has been played with a fair bit :)

the Z makes me smile when i drive it still - everyday at the moment

the TVR makes me grin like a raving looney!

Sounds good mate, yours is the rover V8 though yeh? An awesome sound, there used to be one that went passed the bus stop when i was waiting for the bus when i went to school, it sounded amazing. Always had a bit of a thing for TVR's insurance is reasonable as well!

I'm just a bit unsure of which engine to plumb for, i'll be honest im not that bothered which one i buy as long as its one of the 90's+ cars which are nice looking, but i do love the interior of the cerbera. Tuscan i think is a bit out of my price bracket.

What did you part with for yours if you dont mind me asking?

it was up for £10,995

got a bit off that but not very much!

yeah its the rv8 500 with Taraka conversion (uprated engine goodies - cams, pistons etc etc)

i thought insurance wasnt to bad, limited mileage, social use only >> £600 put my dad on and it jumped another £100!

kept laura off it!!

tuscans are dropping in price quite alot at the moment, probably a good reason for that - must be due rebuilds!

the RV8 is just a big uncomplicated lump and not that many go horendeously wrong.

more electrical faults and other niggles.

and DAMN DAMN dodgy handbrakes!

waiting for mine to get front end respray after the prang. been in the 4 months or so now, really not too happy

Hey mate I used to have a Chimaera and I was like a pig in poo but it cost a fortune to look after but I have to say nothing compared to the zed! this has been the most expensive car I have ever owned the Chim worked most of the time. Cerbys are extremely cool

I just think the cerbera is perfect, yet ive mentioned it to my mates and they have all turned their nose up! Saying its an old mans car, what do they know with their poobarus and evo's!

I went to look at a couple of cerbies and couldnt afford the ticket. I could have bought two by now! and I dont even have leather yet!

hi i have a cerbera 4.5 light weight. now at 446bhp with a red rose convertion. had it for 2 years now and not one problem. has not missed a beat. done 29000 miles. (dry) is a 2003. will give anything a run for its money.

nice thats what i like to hear, has anyone got any experience of the straight 6 motor, (I was really wanting a 4.0 straight 6 cerb) I somehow think the 4.5 would be a bit much for me to cope with LOL.

Speed 6 seems better on insurance as well!

Chris the speed is notorious for being brittle ...the best cerb is the 4.5 by far i agree the interior is fantastic and the look of the car is still fresh, the sound makes the hair on your neck stand up on end ....and there is nearly nothing that can keep up with them in a straight line .....do it you know you want to ..then come to mine and let me have a go :))

hi again. dont go for the speed 6 nothing but a pain in the ass. really un reliable. if you do get a speed 6 make sure that it has had an engine re build. but if you can afford a little extra go for the 4.5

Right well thats the information i was looking for...DAM im going to have to look at a v8! Its only an idea at the moment! Im supposed to be saving for a house LOL

I've had more than one person say that the speed 6 isnt so brilliant so that ties up.

I think this is the point where i start building, selling and repairing PC's again for some extra income towards the "i'm go to die going backwards towards a tree in a fireball" fund :D.

The 4.5's seem to be a bit more desirable for obvious reasons, with the 4.2 is there anything major to go wrong (if anything from reading up they are less stressed than the 4.5 so surly should be more reliable, although not as fast?)

The 4.2 is not far off the pace of a 4.5 at all ....4.5 runs a little hotter and has more mid range grunt perhaps , 4.2 maybe needs to be pushed a little bit harder and so not as economical .....get me, economical in a cerb ..thats a laugh !!! one of the best soundtracks of any car ever built even on tick over they have a menacing note to the exhaust ....on full chat its just sticky white love piddle inducing

get a Griffith instead, its a proper english muscle car!

mine is geting painted today and tomorrow so light at the end of the tunnel

Woo - fcuking - Hoo

I just think the cerbera is perfect, yet ive mentioned it to my mates and they have all turned their nose up! Saying its an old mans car, what do they know with their poobarus and evo's!

Hmmmmm, Cerbera or Subaru/Evo.......

......no contest:xxx:

Cerbera all the way - stylish coupe over common saloon with a big spoiler:tongue:

Plus the Cerbera is one of the very very few cars that will do 0-100 in under 10 seconds stock. For the money you can pick one up for, nothing comes close in performance.

Awesome!!!

Richard:hyper:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thats what attracts me to it... cheap performance LOL. Although i'll have to seriously consider my finances, its not going to be until after xmas at the very earliest if i do jump ship.

Ive thought about the griff mate but im not sure i could cope with a cloth roof, would do my head in i think!

Steve you seem to be very knowledgable on the cerb! You should buy one and give it to me! :D

  • 1 month later...

I just bought a 98 4.2 and have to say i dont think i'll ever stop laughing(until it breaks, lol) although to be fair i think its more the drivers that break them, they need heated up properly and the water oil checked often etc unlike the zed which is pretty much just driven.

the early 4.2's suffered from a crank problem but as long as you go for a 97- then you should be ok,performance in a straight line is awsome but when you come to the twisties nothing is keeping up,mine weighed in at 1060kg's and with the AP racing brakes all round it stops and turns like nothing else i've driven.

hope this helps

Paul.
