Hi all.

Right I've finally got the car working again after the rebuild. I had an electrical problem for ages that turned out to be a shorted wire in the fuel pump carrier. And whilst diagnosing this (i.e. lots of blown fuses, etc), I appear to have developed a further problem. I don't know if this was something else giving up the ghost due to electrical shinanigans going on, or something wholely unrelated.

I can start the car fine. However, I can now turn the ignition off, remove the key and the engine still carries on running with no key in it! I have to stop it by pulling the ignition coil relay out.

Any ideas?

No turbo timer. I've poured over the wiring diagrams and I can see that the ECU is reponsible for cutting power to itself once it's been started. I am seriously considering a faulty ECU but was also wondering if anyone knows of any external devices that can cause the ECU to refuse to switch off.

Maybe it's the actual ignition switch? I've heard this gives problems in a similair nature to what you have.

Agree with CJ, I'm sure that's down to a faulty ECU.

Cheers mate. Nah, ignition switch is fine. Checked that. The problem is that when the ECU loses it's +ve feed from the ignition switch, it keeps the relay open that supplies the other +ve feed to it.

It appears that the +ve feed from the ignition switch starts up the ECU. After that, it uses another relay to supply its power. In other words, it is responsible for turning itself off.

I don't suppose anyone in the St Helens area has got an ECU I could borrow for an hour or so to verify if that is the culprit?

Alternatively if anyone has one to sell....

Mike,

I had this exact problem with my previous zed. It was a faulty ECU and replacing it solved the problem. I am convinced that I had done something to it when either recharging the battery or jump starting it.

I'd help you mate, but i've got it lent out to someone else at the mo and am waiting for it back! And mine is from a 1992 TT Auto Import, so dunno if it would even work!

If it will help you though, let me know and i will get in touch as soon as i get it back. :)

Yep that sorted it. Thanks everyone for the advice. £70 off eBay already socketed, swapped my chip into it and everything's now sorted.
