Just a quick one, can anybody tell me how much brake fluid I'll need to fill the systems. I'm gonna flush it this weekend & don't wanna come up short.

Although it doesn't say in the manual, 1 litre should be enough. IIRC, most brake fluid comes in 1/2 liter bottles. So just get two of them, you'll probably have a tiny bit left over.

would that be inc flushing it through the lines then si? im thinking of changing the calipers and while im at it upgrading the fluid to dot 5.1 so the old oil needs to flushed!

iv'e heard that 5.1 is not good to use on the z something about it being synthetic! Iirc Dot 4 is recommended.

You may want 2litres Gaz. From what I remember, you can get away with a litre if you're being frugal with it and have very little in the way of spillage. For the price of brake fluid, and it's not much, might be worth grabbing a 2nd litre's worth?

ok thats interesting thank you snoopy.

anybody else clarify?

The yanks all run DOT3. DOT 3 and 4 are almost the same. Boiling points just vary. But I think, DOT 5 and DOT 5.1 are silicone based? I do remember reading something regarding newer glycol based DOT5+ which is the same compound as DOT 3 and 4.

I don't know what's compatiable with the Zs braking system. I am guessing it's to do with the seals? I'd imagine that DOT 5 and above need some kind of EPDM seals?

After a quick search for you, I have read that 5.1 is a suitable upgrade to DOT 3 & 4 systems, is not silicon based and will not be effected by mixing with DOT 3 & 4. So yes flush the system through, but it is not over critical.

DOT 5 however, is silicon based and must not be mixed with 3 or 4. A complete clean of the system (a fully strip clean of calipers etc) must be undertaken!

As I under stand it now, DOT 5 is not 300zx friendly, where as DOT 5.1 is a good upgrade.

Hope this helps.

I think its to do with being able to hold water, Dot 5.1 wont hold water or something but has a higher boiling point. May have to do some reading on this.
