Centre Bearing

Does anyone have some approximate time scales it takes to change aprop centre bearing ive been quoted £100 (a minimum, if they get problems it will be more) to get it changed (me supplying parts) and im not sure if its a fair price or not.

Could be done in an hour by somebody very familiar, but 2 hrs labour sounds about right. They may run into problems with Snapped exhaust bolts.

If you having bearing problems then Its best to check and change the rear gearbox mount too. Its the sagging of the rear mount that moves the propshaft out of alignment and causes premature bearing failure. A new bearing will fail again with a sagging gearbox mount.

could i do it with some technically skilled friends and a ramp?

Do i need a puller and a bearing press or not?

No special tools needed. Its fairly straight forward. Other than what paul mentioned there is a 27mm nut that holds the flange on the end of the front half of prop which you need to remove and hammer off the end to get the bearing off.

Make sure you mark the two halves of the propshaft before seperating, so they go back together in the same place, and make note of which order centre bearing washers go on the Bearing carrier.

and as Paul mentioned, your rear gearbox mount is the likely culprit to the bearing failure.

Well the bearing was actually knackered when it was converted from an auto to a manual, as in the bearing on the manual shaft.

The one on my auto shaft was okay so i assumed they would see sence and swap them bearings, but no... It came back with the absolutly ruined bearing on there.

So i believe the gearbox mountings are okay, im not even sure if its already had new ones - i might have had them replaced when the car was converted.

As for everything else, the exhaust has been on the car a year, and was off less than 6 months ago when it had its sex change. So I assume it should all come to bits fairly easily...!

if i can do it you can too buddy

just look at the face below do you think u got what it takes? :D
