Hello all! just noticed that my steering wheel has play in it when you pull it up and down its fine but left and right it moves quiet a bit is this the bushes? or could it be something else? any advice would be great! and is this a simple job to sort??

Its the top bracket on the column.

There are two 12mm nuts holding two big metal spacer things onto the top braket of the column.

Mine is doing the same at the moment, i tighten it up but then it seems to come loose again?

It probably should fail the mot but you can get to the nuts / braket by taking off the bit of trim under the clocks etc

someone must have a solution for this?

Surely theres someone who has a solution on this one??? or is it us 3 in the hole world that has the same problem!!!

Bit of a common problem this, there are two small triangle shaped spacers that are secured by 2 x 12 mm nuts which hold up the steering column, overtightening the 12mm nuts will have no effect other than risking them snapping!

The spacers themselves have little plastic pegs that locate the bracket and the column together, these pegs wear and sometimes break and it is this what causes the movement.

However if you loosen the 12mm nuts slightly and turn the spacers to the left or right a bit whilst tightening the 12mm nut back up you can achieve a satisfactory result, it is more of a work around than a cure and may at a later date need adjusting again, this I guess is what edk83 has found with out realising it.

I have no plastic pegs!

But I do remember the spacers having little holes in them

robertz you may have found the answer!
