The oil fumes from the breather pipe which go to the intake to be burnt, gets very heavy with High Boost engines, and can lead to problems such as coating the AFM with oil.

So instead of burining the fumes, you catch them in a tank, and every so often empty the tank. If you just vented them to air you would get a horrible oil smell in the car.

Track cars have to catch the fumes and not burn them, for the risk of oil getting on the track. They use to be just plastic bottles.

Hope this helps.
