Hi guys,

After having written off my zed a year ago, I have finally bought another car... a '96 BMW 840ci 4.4 v8!! the condition is excellent and only 4 years ago, the 1st owner spent 15k on respray, retrim and replenishing the entire electrically adjustable suspension system purely because he didnt know what to replace it with so thought he'd make it like brand new again! lol

Also I know the last owner well who knows the 1st owner so the history is all legit.

It drives great and the sports mode suspension is pretty good fwiw.

Heres some pics!

very nice, i always had a soft spot for these beasts

:D:D:D Nice choice, always really loved those cars, i'd of picked the 4.4 aswell :D

Beast is right, as in Ugly Beast, fair play to ya mate, but the Zed is a much more handsome motor.

you'd get a fortune for that plate if you could find a serious honda owner

thanks for the comments guys; i looked at many cars beforehand and just couldnt figure out what to get... this car kind of just came along and because i knew it was a good car, i just had to have it.

i think i'm just a fan of the early nineties sports cars generally, i would have loved to have gotten an NSX but they are still pretty expensive!

the only thing it needs is a new exhaust and AC compressor... and i'm finding out just how expensive bimmer parts are! lol

i think a custom exhaust is the way forward, all off the shelf ones are too expensive. does anyone recommend anywhere in london to do this?

also what good BMW forums would you guys recommend? lol or are they all full of ponses!?!

Excellent stuff! Certainly a worthy replacement! The 840 was one of the cars I was looking at before choosing the Z. Love them. NSX, well, everyone knows my feelings for those!

A man of taste. :duffer:

Nice one Darren! Glad you finally got your V8 beast :)

I've always liked the 840 and 850 just something about the shape, almost as timeless as the Z32!

Well done, but save your pennies for a '99 spec and come join us again in a while :p

All the best.

lol Rob you know i love the 99-spec! there was a short clip of clarkson overtaking a white 99-spec zed in the gtr last sunday, it looked great!

I would highly reccommend pipecraft in basildon. (essex). http://homepage.ntlworld.com/susan.insole/?sfgdata=4|

Without doubt the best custom exhaust place around. Had my 300zx exhaust custom built by them. 3" ss all the way through and 2 x dual chrome backboxes. This was done 4 years ago and to this day these isn't a single blemish on the exhaust !.

Very nice... I've got the 4.4 litre V8 in my daily driver (540i E39) and I have to say it's a lovely engine - plenty of grunt and creamy smooth...

That looks in lovely nick too - nice one!! :nana2:

CheerZ,

JB.

Nice on Matey. I used to be very partial to the 850 but my feelings have sort of waned. It looks a lovely example though. Hope she serves you well. What milage has it done? Just be awhere that the auto boxe brain seems to die at about 100K mark and its £1800 for a recon gearbox ECU. only discovered this when my Ex's 540 auto box fubar'd.

110k miles :( oh dear. is there anything i can do to check the condition of the autobox ecu?

Hello bud,

Hope you're kepping well?

Sorry but after seeing your Z in the flesh, the BMW just doesn't have the same touch, just not a head turner like your Z. But if you like it, then that's all that matters :)

I really don't know. just a quicky question is it the tripronic box or the original 540 sports auto. as I was told the tripronic is good for 300 thou and a much better box. I'm sure it was optional on the pre 95 840's and 50's

true... my old zed was exceptional, part of why i didnt get another one is because 1) i couldnt find any as nice as mine was, 2) i couldnt be assed to turn a nearly nice zed into a really nice zed!

its also a kind of been there done that with the zx. i got this car so cheap that i can easily sell it on if i need to and not really lose anything. its also in really good condition for what it is! you should take a look some time!

Mark, my car has the later v8 4.4 M62 engine and 5 speed tiptronic box, i have been lead to understand that they are the good auto box... just need to do a fluid change on it!
