So who thinks these tyres are legal

The one the other side is the same.

As it is a lease vehicle I have to take it ot Kwik Fit, I sat for an hour waiting for them to be changed only to be told that they wouldn't do them because they weren't illegal and the lase company wouldn't let them. :xxx:

What do you guys think?

I'd ask them to give it to you in writing that they are legal and therefore will not change and they accept any legal liability if you have an accident or get a fine by VOSA. Then you in the clear. My understanding is that so long as 3/4 of the tread is within the leagal requirements then they are leagal, but that looks more like 50 -60 percent is way beyond.

And that is the problem, they say they are legal but you can gurantee a copper won't, they will go the other way.

My governor has basically said don't drive it so I am sat at home waiting for a call to say it has been sorted and I can go and get them changed.

This is why I always end up getting into arguments because I wouldn't have left the garage till I had it in writing or had new tyres. I would have rung the fleet hire place and told them.

The Garage don't want to change them because thet are loosing money the more often the tyres are changed

Anyway if your on salary its a enforced day off :D

wish i could get an enforced day off, lol.

They look legal to me unfortunately, but only just. They are not quite down to the tread markers. The one on the left is above it. Lease companies are quite stringent with tyres and the likes of Kwik Fit, ATS etc will say no to fitting new tyres. Reason? They get mystery callers from the lease companies.

Kwik Fit/ATS etc won't replace tyres at the tread markers either. Tread marker indicates 2mm of tread left. For the tyre company to fit new ones, it has to be under that. Legal limit is 1.6mm. If it's between that and 2.00mm, then they should replace them. Half your tyre looks to be slightly above the 2.00mm limit as the left hand side is just above the wear marker. The right hand side looks like it's on the tread marker @ 2.00. The extreme right hand side is below the limit though.

The best way to get new tyres is to drive over a nail and give it a slow puncture. They won't repair tyres that are below 3mm as it's not economically viable.

just because a tyre is bald in the inside shoulder does not make it illegal, it only has to be above 1.6mm depth over 3/4 of the tread width. I'd not be happy, asking you to risk points on your licence because they are too stingy to replace a tyre which is obviously very dubious.

That tyre looks exactly the same as the front 2 on my Vectra which failed its MOT on Monday on, guess what...

The front tyres !!!

If my car failed its MOT because of tyres like that, I am sure that means that yours CANNOT be legal???

10 - 15 minutes of drift action on a private road/car park will soon take the 0.4 mm off to leave them non legal. Then just pop back tomorrow for another opinion.:D:D:D

They have to have visible tread though on the outside quarter.
