Where can I find the engine number (& "model number") on an import SWB? The plate at the front of the engine bay has the chassis number, and the engine type, but not the engine *number* frown.gif

Help, anyone? I've tried looking through the FAQs, but I can't find the info I need...

Featured Replies

The engine number is actually on the engine in an almost completely unreadable position. A diagram in the online manual does show the location though.

Oh bugger, I was worried that might be the case, hoping that it might be duplicated on an easy-to-reach plate somewhere frown.gif OK thx, I'll check through the FAQs again...

er... there appear to be big black covers in the way of where the diagram suggests it should be, there's no way I can see the front of the engine block at all. Is there? Or am I being a moron?

All I can see is a sticky outy bit below these covers, with a little plate on it that gives part number, serial number, lubrication details, etc. I can just about read some of the plate, but the "serial number" doesn't correspond to what I thought the engine number should be (it says 00300300), which leads me to believe this is just a separate part, and not the engine number plate at all :S

How come you don't describe it as *completely* unreadable? What is the secret? Do I have to take bits off? Ugh...

Oh, or is it at the top/back of the engine? I was looking at the front... jeez, can't tell which way round that diagram is :/

Do I seem panicky yet?

Completley unreadable in that I've never been able to read mine ! biggrin.gif

How come you need this particular number? I only ask 'cos this is the first time I have heard of anyone needing it.

Is this because you need to find the part no for your quarterlight? Is so, it sounds odd that Autoglass need an engine no to find out about glass.

Only a thort....

AndyP, it was the "almost" completely bit that threw me :P

Gio, yes, it's Autoglass. I've since called them back and told them that they'll have to live with the chassis number & model number alone. It struck me as strange as well, but maybe it's just proceedure...

Anyway, it reminds me of when I first bought the Z - I had the info about defective valves in early 1990, had the engine numbers I had to look out for on NAs, but couldn't find the engine number to compare it to anyway. And the vendor didn't have a clue either :/

Does anyone feel like commenting about what the best way to sort the screwdriver scratchings around the door handle is? I could take it to a bodyshop, but I wondered, as it's only paint damage, if one of these paint chip/scratch repairy people might be a cheaper option? I don't know anything about them...

Or should I not touch paint chip people with a barge pole? Or are they not going to be able to properly deal with a scratch that is down to the metal? Or are they also pretty expensive? I was thinking I could get them do the extensive chipping of the front end at the same time if it worked out as financially viable.

Any opinions on this kind of thing appreciated smile.gif

Oh, and is it right I should have a police incident number thing for getting the glass on insurance? Autoglass never asked for it, but someone said I should. It occurs to me that the insurance stuff implies the glass is covered whether I did it myself or was a victim of crime... comments (apart from how pathetic I am)?

My windscreens been done twice and nothing was asked for by the insurance (Privilage) or Autoglass.
