Thought about all the stabbings recently and came up with:-

Carrying a knife in public should carry an attempted murder charge and the full sentence handed out with every single case.

If you’re carrying a knife you must be intending to use it yes? Therefore charge them with the fact.

Your thoughts??

I guess you don't go fishing?...or ever shop for a new knife? Knifes are tools which are used in everyday life. It's like banning a baseball bat in public.

I do understand your thoughts, I'd like to see all weapons banished.

I think they should up the sentence to 10 years for a knife and 15 for a gun. I know they will say it's hard to implement but we are to soft in this country on crime it's a joke. No offence to the pc's on this site (my brother is one as well) as I know you aren't responsible for the sentencing.

I think the arresting officers will be able to distinguish between someone just bought a cooking knive, or someone by a lake fishing and some scrote they just stopped and found in his back pocket.

I don't wanna get into any arguments, so i'll limit my response to this one post :)

That is ridiculous, you cannot possibly charge people with crimes that have not been commited! I carry a penknife round, as it is very useful during my working day, does that mean i should be charged with attempted murder - i fvcking hope not!!!

If you can show good cause for having it then cause not. Fishing/work etc.

As I said, arresting officers will know WHO to arrest ;)

Get where you coming from but if you've bought a kitchen knife you'll have a receipt and original packaging? If you haven't that's a bit odd isn't it?

Fishing, if you have the rest of your gear with you or fishing licence (if they still exist?) then fine, the people who aren't genuine won't have these with them. When it all kicks off in the pub your hardly liking to rumage through you tackle box are you??

Ok forget my one post cos i have more to say, lol.

In your original post you did not specify that there would be exceptions! And also you cannot possibly think that your average bobby is capable of distinguishing the differences between anything!

I apologise if i have upset any officers, however i would not trust a copper to do anything!

i completely agree with your hatred of weapons Nick, and im sure you'll agree its not the weapon thats the danger, its the person using it. as mentioned above, a knife can be perfectly safe and have a propor use in one person's hand, yet used for stabbing or threatening in another's. i think the solution (which will probably never happen in our lifetimes) is to make crims terrified of committing crime. if they knew that upon being caught theyd be locked up for many years in a dirty overcrowded cell with nothing to do apart from stand with back to the wall in fear of their 'other' virginity, they might think twice.

edit: i'm going to stop there ;)

If you have reasonable cause to carry, ie a chef on route to work, a game warden, fishing, etc then no problems as coppers know when dealing with someone if this is the case.

When i was a copper a couple of years back we stopped a 17 yr old kid in broad daylight in a shopping centre with a proper Rambo style hunting knife strapped to his back the blade was 14", and serated on the upper. his excuse for such an offensive weapon, was just in case he ever needed to use it.

Because he had never been in trouble and admitted the offence of possession of an offesive weapon he was given a caution.

Basically if you carry a knife you should do life............

Yes people carry knives, yes some use them, and yes it is high the media at the moment because the brother of someone famous was the 17th person killed in a knife crime recently. These are all tragic deaths that should not have happened. The problem is that no one seems to be punnished propperly for any crime these days so just making yet another law that will be meaning less won't stop people carrying knives.

I don't have a solution by the way.

The root of the problem is not the knife it is the chavscum this country had allowed to breed and take over the streets. It is much easier to catch motorists speeding and send them a fine through the post than tackle real crime because the normal working bloke is a much easier target. The ironic thing is that the scum damaging your car or kicking your fence in is the first person to cry to the police if you went out and whacked him, and just watch how fast the police will attend then to arrest you.

We are paying the price of softly softly do-gooder society and it wont change untill I become priminister..

I saw a programme recently where they were interviewing a bunch of kids on the streets of London who at the time of interviewing admitted to having a knife on them right there and then... when asked why their response was:-

'for protection against the others who carry knives'

So its one vicious circle that will never end :(

A carries a knife to protect himself against B who is carrying a knife because A has one .....

I still carry my Leatherman with me, i used to use it all the time when i was working in maintenance due to the different screwdriver attachments and the tips of the pliers were great circlip pliers also but even now when i'm at my mums or my nan's they always have odd jobs for me to do so its still handy. It still has 2 blades on it and i can't tell you the last time i used the blades but i presume if i was stopped i'd still get charged.

Country has gone soft, criminals are being released early and are not being punished enough...the government wont do anything about it as the prisons are already full up and they cant seem to control the problem...things wont change till they get more prisons built and can actually make it easier to house them.....till then people...nothing will happen

I quite often have to use a knife for my work. No I aint an assasin. I now make sure its in with all my other tools. FISHING? If the knife is in with all the other tackle then IMO thats fine. There is a valid reason for having it with you and lets face it any thug isnt going to bother with a tool bag or tackle bag.

To a certain extent I agree with you nick but not so heavy as to say attempted murder. BUT the punishment should be a whole lot more than it is. The death penalty should be re-instated and I think more than half would think again before killing or stabbing someone. Maybe not straight away but soon after a few have been executed it would.

When all's said and done we all know that something has got to be done because its getting stupid now in a time when every thing you do is governed by health and safety you would think that taking a stroll down the local shops would not be dangerous?

That sounds like a smaller version of the cold war? But a fact non the less.

"Carrying a knife in public should carry an attempted murder charge and the full sentence handed out with every single case."

Everyone misses the point with tougher sentences - its not the prospect of longer sentences that are a deterrent its the prospect of actually getting caught.

You could REDUCE sentences and reduce crime if the criminals actually though they would be caught!

aint read the replies in this thread, but let me tell you, its not the knife that kills, its the scrote that holding onto it that kills, to date ive been attacked with sharpened screwdrivers, glass bottle's, sharpened stick's, razor blades in a bar of soap and a makeshift nuckle duster made of a wire coat hanger wrapped roung the hand with the two ends poking outwards

its not just knifes that penetrate the skin

p.s, nearly forgot, got actually stabbed with a syringe, luckily it was winter, i had my thick jumper and wooly body warmer on, it didnt actally get to my skin but was fookin close

I'm from london myself, and yes its true to say more and more "youngsters" are carrying offensive weapons with them. Its one thing to carry its another to use. What are the reasons behind teenagers running round stabbing each other????? I dont have the answer, but the argument about protection against other carriers of knives, at the end of the day these people still have a choice. What effects there decision to stab someone????? couldnt tell you, but i tend to look at peoples upbringing, ive lived in south london for many years and ive been on the recieving end of a knife, but yet i still have no urge to run out with a knife for revenge or protection. Unfortunately over the last 5 years it has become socially acceptable for someone to carry a weapon. and it has only become clear because of recent tragic events and media coverage. Many people certainly say stiffer penalties will put reduce the problem. to a certian extent I agree, but being sent to prison in the uk doesnt have any fear factor attached, infact some people seem to think its something to be proud of. The way I see it, unless people are bought up with proper values and repect for life the problem will never subside.

I think the law is approaching this the wrong way. Look at the facts - most of the people getting done for carrying knifes are spotty yoofs who couldn't hold their own in a fair and square punch up. They carry blades and other make-shift weapons to threaten and intimidate law abiding citizens who are just going about their business. What we should do is allow EVERYONE to carry a weapon for self defense purposes. Next time a pleb pulls a razor blade glued to a couple of coins, I can pull out my sword and hack his arms off. Then he won't try that again!

On a serious note, I lived in Kuwait for 6 months in 2004, and let me tell you, crime is not an issue. Anyone convicted of a crime is put into a stinking communual cell, and it is up to friends and family to feed and water them (the state doesn't waste money on feeding them). Theft gets your hand off, Assault is treated as attemted murder (capital offense), and as for rapists - that is left for the victim's family to deal with out in the desert.

The police ride around in pickup trucks with 50cal machine guns mounted on the bed, and AK-47's on the dashboard.

I felt safer walking around there at night as I ever have in Glasgow or London.

Over there, its the same attitude as here in Germany - breaking the law deserves a punishment. In the UK prisoners have better living conditions than a lot of people trying to scrape by on minimum wage jobs, just to pay yet another tax bill, or buy over priced fuel and groceries.

I know it seems like a rant, but I left the UK in 2003 and never been back. I have been to many different places. Although I miss certain things, I have realized that the UK is a sh1t hole - and untill the Government get a grip on things, will enjoy a better, cheaper, more relaxed, and higher quality of life elsewhere, as will so many other expats.
