This is my first post on here, so I’d just like to say “hello” I’ve been a member for a couple of years and always followed the threads closely.

I took the plunge last year and brought my first Zed - a 94 UK TT. Absolutely love it, the most awesome car I have ever owned !!

Anyway, it’s developed a severe juddering / knocking through the steering wheel under braking. The offside tension rod bush is leaking, so I’m guessing this will be a good place to start to find a cure ?

What are my best options to fix it – can I replace just the bushes, or do I need to replace both the rods?

I’ve heard a few bad reports about Poly Bushes not giving enough movement and causing suspension failure. I’m not a mad crazy driver, I’m not into chucking my car into corners, so don’t need a racecar suspension set up. Should I just go for original equipment replacements ?

Finally, are they an easy DIY fit ?

Cheers.

Ben.

I'm no expert bud :( However i think i would check for warped brake discs if it is juddering under braking :)

Firstly welcome to the nut house.

If your bushes are leaking then that would be the best palce to start as it is more than likely the problem.

I do believe you can just replace the bushes and you shouol be able to get some original ones from MJP, have look for them in the traders section, or you might even pick some up second hand.

Hope this helps.

We want to see pics of your car as well.

Leaking bushes need to be fixed, that is an MoT failure. It is probably easiest, but maybe not cheapest, to replace with standard Nissan parts, as they just bolt on.

If your brake discs are warped you will be able to feel the pulsing if you brake very gently just as you are coasting to a stop. If it only judders when braking hard then it's probably the bushes that are causing it.

Thanks for that. I should have said, that’s the only other thing I have checked.

They both seem fine, not warped, and the pads have plenty of life in them.

The juddering doesn't start immediately, but after about quarter mile, and the car doesn't pull to either side.

The juddering on braking? Is it most noticable under gentle braking or heavy braking?

If under gentle braking and less when heavy braking. Then look at you bushes first, especialy your 2 steering rack bushes which suffer if contaminated with slight powersteering fluid leaks or general oil contamination.

If the judder is worse the harder you brake then your looking at warped discs. Usually due to pad and disc combinations. ie green and red stuff pads destroy standard discs. or cheep discs. Ferodo DS2500 are a top pad that give better braking and kinder to standard discs

Thanks Coopers, Andy P & Markzx for the advice.

I gave Mick at MJP a call, what a nice bloke, very informative ! I’ve ordered some new Nissan Bushes..... 3 weeks from Japan !!! I thought I’d start with them, and then move onto the brakes.

I’m going to see if I can get a salvaged rod to see me thorough till then. It’s MOT time soon as well !!

I’ll get some photos of my car on here soon, and then get along to one of the meet ups. I should have got on here ages ago. I’ve so much I need to find out about my Zed - the most technological car I’ve owned before this was an Escort !!!

Cheers.

I have the same problem at the mo - it's definately the tension rod bushes! I also found out the Nissan ones cost around £45 plus VAT each and will take a while to arrive.

I tried Luke at the Z Centre - http://www.zcentre.co.uk/shop/index.php?cPath=21_28_58 - for ES poly bushes as they are only £35 plus VAT a pair and don't supposedly don't have the rod-snapping issue attached to them unlike other types.

However they are on back order so I chose the adjustable rods, all in at £130 plus VAT.

I got them next day - like Mike, Luke is also a top guy!

Richard:)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
