I tried biodiesel in my mrs' pug 406 2.1 TD and it made it run like an absolute sack of crap!

I will never put that sh!t in it again.

Avoid it IMO ;)

But.... I've never made my own and don't plan too after this lol

I bought it....... It was 85p/litre IIRC......

As I said it ran fine for a while, but then started running really rough. Tickover jumping about all over the place.

I changed a fuel filter (which was full of something that resembled motor oil) that cured it for about 5 miles lol...

What did cure it permanently was to run the tank empty, then put £5 of unleaded in and £15 of diesel.

I swear to you, 1 mile down the road the car was back to normal and has stayed normal ever since (4+ weeks ago now).

I just tip pure veg oil into my 306 td and its sweet as a nut.

to make real biodiesel you really want to be getting waste veg oil thats free or cheap and buy your methanol in bulk. If not it will cost almost as much as real diesel to make.

I've almost finished making the processor and will hopefully be making my own in a matter of weeks ;)

The problem seams to be a lot of outlets who sell biodiesel don't fully wash it which makes soap which causes blockages which is why I want to make my own (oh and to save all that money! lol).

Paul, problem with straight veg oil now is the price, over £1.12 in Tescos :O absolutely spot on with waste oil, only way to go :)

yea i was using veg from tescos at 56p a litre then I went in a week later and it 108p. what a rip off.

Funny that - it's been shooting up in price, along with diesel, ever since the Government legalised it's use as fuel.

I know it tends to work better with older machines but i did read on a forum that one of the guys is running his d5 volvo on 20% cooking oil and it was working fine with no issues.

I'm looking at buying a bio processor to keep in the garage and making friends with the local chippy when i move if i'm going ot have to do 100 miles return a day.

If i can find somewhere that sells bio i'll try it first and see how i get on with it first then if it goes well i'll invest a few hundred in a processor and see how i go. I've seen cheapish ones for 300 quid but i'd rather spend a little bit more and get something that cleans the diesel properly so you don't end up with the build up that some people experience.

I noticed that with the price, its definately not inflation on vege oil is it? Cheeky sods the government they really are

Bud, buying one is deffo not the way to go as a lot of them don't take safety into mind when mixing chemicals. I was ready to spend money on buying one then reading through forums, was guided towards making my own using a design from a guy by the name of Graham Laming - http://www.graham-laming.com/bd/ecosystem/state_diagram_new.htm

If you're seriously looking into this, join up on http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/ really helpfull people on there :)

Awesome, cheers buddy thanks for that :)

Potentially from what i've read if you use waste oil it costs you about 6p a litre including the chemicals so my petrol/diesel bill would go from £70 a week to £5 a week :hyper:

Nick

don't think that figure is right, I worked it out at between 30 and 40p depending on how much methanol you can recover (the GL design uses a condensor to get back some of the methanol which would otherwise go into the atmosphere) and that's with waste oil. Still a massive saving though ;)

Exactly, if i manage to make diesel for half price i'd be happy :)

£35 quid a week would be awesome and make it well worth the hassle.

I've read the guide and it does look pretty complex but i guess once you've done it a few times it would become second nature

Ran my TDi golf for a while on 50% mix straight from the supermarket (when it was £1.25 for 3 litres!...strange how it doubled overnight!!) anyway it ran like a dream...in fact better. See my old posts!..Anything german will be fine others might need fuel pump tweaks. Since the price hike in oil i've not bothered as it's uneconomical...

..However their have been lots of heating oil thefts near where my folks live in West Wales and this was on the news the other night....I suspect that this is now the preferred choice for fuel theifs who used to drain deisel tanks and that it's these people rather than old folks trying to keep warm in the middle of summer!!! It's still cheap in comparison to veg oil and i have a mate who's tried it and it works well ;-) Recycled oil through a micron filter is the only way to go now with the hike in all oil prices if anyone has gone down this route then i want some advice on the kit so i can recycle from my local chippy and chinese who get charged to remove it....win win situation...

I'm willing to give it a go purely for the money saving, it cost me £78 quid to fill the scorpio last night :(
