Well, after a few harrowing months of Zed ownership, it's nearly time to do a few bits of basic maintenance.

I'm soon going to be needing some new tyres (mainly because whoever put on the wide wheels didn't sort the camber... grr...) and was wondering if there were any suggestions? I currently have Pirelli Rainsports which are as sticky as anything, but obviously wear quickly too. I've been looking through places like http://www.mytyres.co.uk and have no idea what to go for! I need 265 35 R18's rear and 235 fronts if that makes a difference.

I was going to ask about oil, but I found a post where j1mmytt was whinging about someone asking another oil question... so I won't ;)

Ta all!

10/60oil, quick answer, lol.

tou'd need a decent tyre on it and by the sounds of it you need a camber adjustment kit to stop the wear

I personally would recommend, mobil1 0-40 oil and falken tyres, unless you want to spend money in which case, pirelli, bridgestone etc etc........

10W60 and 0W40 - bit of a difference! But I have heard Mobil1 from a couple of people. It's also gotta be fully synthetic hasn't it?

As for the Falken tyres - something like this?

Are these any good or would the extra 40 - 50 quid a piece for Bridgstones or similar make a massive difference?

As for the camber, I'm HOPING that it's sorted now. I took my car for four wheel alignment when I realised it was wearing the inside edges (70 quid plus VAT, dammit...) and they say it's all good now, apart from it being a minute or two out 'which won't make a difference' apparently.

The camber on the front isn't adjustable as standard so have you got adjustable upper arms? A couple of mins could of course make all the difference if it means they are out of tolerance.

Have attached the printout from my set up which was done a couple of weeks ago.

Had mine done buy these guys.

You could also try this site for the tyres.

Cheers Darrell - I have a look at this properly when I get home (time to go!).

Yes, apparently I do have adjustable upper arms fitted, and at the rear it was a FRACTION out of the ideal range. Can't remember where it was I had it done right now, but it was a place recommeded by Zedworld...

Cheapest for Falken, brilliant service too. http://www.camskill.co.uk/

Hmm - they do look good, and not just for Falken either! I'd just need to have a word with my local garage to see if they would fit em for me...

I've just had a word with Opie Oils too. They recommended some Silkolene Pro 5w40 stuff at £45-ish or some Motul stuff at about £27, along with one of their purolator filters. You guys reckon that's OK?

I would imagine so, i can't think of anybody better to ask about oil ;) :)

I'd go for 10w 40 if its a stanard ish TT or 10w 50 if you like to get frisky at the weekends and seriously beet her up.

As for Tyres You cannot fit better tyres than the Bridgestone SO2's. They are now down as a Porsche only fitment but if you shope around you'll get them. Tweeks stock them.

The 300zx was design on these tyres and when you put them on your car you can tell. Nothing is better in the rain for the Zed and they last longer than Mitchelin Pilots which I do like though not so much in the rain.

Thanks for your help with this guys.

One more thing though - I mentioned that AFAIK we're supposed to change the oil every 3K, but was told by Opie Oils that with the Motul they recommended I'd be OK with 6 to 8K and with the Silkolene 8 to 10K. Really?

Well if he has told you that, i would'nt doubt it, cos he knows just about everything there is to know about oil :D

HTH :)

It all depends on the kind of driving you do and the kind of temps you put into you oil. If you use any increase in standard boost you will start breaking the oil down and shortening its life span. Also if your doing lots of short journeys where the engine temps don't get up to proper opperating temps then you'll get a bit more ware which clags the oil up and turns it black just as much as cooking it. I always change mine every 4K.

My blue Zed did 122,000 miles on original turbos with a chip and 1 bar of boost before I had any problems. The Car was previously owned by a friend of a friend who did the same. He bought the car of the guy who had it new. I bought it with 32,000 miles on the clock and by the time it had 34,000 on the clocks it was chipped boosted and induction.

Hmm - OK.

Well, at the mo she's running 323 RWHP after having a chip, induction kit and exhaust fitted but I'm looking at turning up the boost to a bar as soon as I can get hold of a decent boost gauge. However, it's my daily driver and I do 20-odd miles each day to work and back so with the cost of fuel it doesn't get hammered much - just the odd quick blast as I hit a nice bit of clear road ;) Also, I told Tim at Opie exactly what was car was running and how it was driven before he recommended those oils and service intervals, so I'm sure this was taken into account.

Going on what everyone's been saying, I might try some of the Motul stuff and change it at 6K, monitoring it until then to see if it starts to get a bit black. If it does, I'll change it sooner!

Cheers guys

Oilman knows his stuff mate!

Most high quality synthetic oil is more than suitable for extended oil changes nowadays. It can be less beneficial changing it too early as the oil doesn't get the chance to "work properly" if it is replaced every 3k miles. I am happy to leave my ZX for at least 6k miles, or annually now as I don't do the mileage anymore.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
