I know, I know, I'm allowed to havea non standard plate because it's an import or so I was lead to believe.

I don't have a license plate bracket on my Stillen.

I was trying to get some sense out of the police that pulled me over but they were adament that as soon as imports come into this country they need to obide by the UK rules, fair enough I guess.

So I'll be ording new plates tomorrow.

Any suggestions about what type would look best on a stillen front end (UK legal that is). Also where would I put it ?

Any ideas, any photoshop ideas also ?

Nah, they are City of London cops, they are only interested in petty crime :).

I would have thought if the letters were on white background then it's legal as your letters are a standard font? Did you get a producer to take it to an MOT test centre for re-check? If not ignore them..

Put it this way, the copper you spoke to doesnt have a clue what he is talking about, he has been confused on the fact that imported cars can wear the registration plate from there originating country for 3 months prior to being registered in the country as opposed to actual number plate size/lettering/spacing for imported vehicle numberplates. Now i cant be precise with you coz i cant actually measure your lettering and spacing, but to my proffesional eye, it looks ok, could possibly do with being a touch wider(the W looks cramped and the spacing on SMW looks a touch close).

Do a quick search on here, someone put up the numberplate legislation recently, and im sure youll find your plate is perfectly legal, and if not, it wont be far off.

HTH from your resident plod

Nick

I wouldnt sacrifice your cooling for the sake of a £30 fine, reg plate offences are non endorsable, so id leave it and put up with a £30 fine every now and again and maintain your lower engine temps.

mate just stick the bloody thing where it is now, whats teh difference?

Just checkerd the regs as I sell number plates at the shop, the smallest front reg i can supply is a "Short Standard" measuring 370mm by 110mm, displaying new charles wright characters in STD, 3D, Hi Line or Carbon effect.

If you want me to make you one give me a buzz 024 7632 6666 (log book serial number required!!!)

I think the rear plate is allowed to be a different size, because the hole in the bodywork is too small for a 'standard' UK plate.

[sensible]As far as I can see there is no reason why you can't fit a 'standard' plate to the front.[/sensible] !

Anyway, I think the new regulations also stipulate the size of the plate, not just the size and spacing of the letters.

Thanks Guys,

Nick, thanks for the input mate, I'll have a search through the forum.

I know my letters are actually smaller than standard, but only slightly.

I'll take a picture tomorrow along side the one on the car, as I have a standard front plate in the shed.

One of the things that annoyed me is they also said I need to change the rear plate, Ok, I know the front one might be touch and go, but surely there's nothing wrong with this one ???

Oh and in response to the other question, I just got a pink slip whihc was a notification/warning of a stop - no documents needed to be produced and no mot needed to be rechecked, also no fine or points etc.

I'll give you a buzz tomorrow mate and we can sort out payment etc.

I'd only want standard lettering rather than all that fancy 3D or carbon stuff :).

Yes, Andy I know I can put standard one on there, I think I'll go with B19rks one to save getting pulled over all the time.

Usually I don;t mind getting pulled over for checks and stuff as it makes me feel like if someone did manage to steal my car it wouldn't get far.

The annoying thing today was, I just picked my wife up from the hospital where she had to have an operation on her nose. They could clearly see her sitting in the front seat with plastercast on her nose and a swab filling up with blood as they walked around the car.

Usually you have to taek it to an mot station to have whatever you're supposed to fix check that it's been fixed...Faulty light, no indicator etc etc.

Sounds like some normal (non- traffic cop) being an arse...

As i said your letters are close to legal - poss spacing issue though? If it was on a white background on your bumper then no probs...search the net for cateram 7's etc and trhey all have stick on plates on the nose as there are no mounts on them..

cop's tryed to get funny with me about this plate, and all i said was ...see you in court... the judge said ,stop wasting my time ...

the cop was not to happy ....:rofl:

Imports can only have non standard front plates ONLY if the bumper has no provision to do so.This is fine for MOTs but the police check vehicles using the construction and use laws which are different.hence the reason you can pass an mot but get pulled outside the test station by police and get a 14 day rectification for a defect.Crazy or what !!

You can not have smaller size plates on imports if the standard size UK will physically fit. The fact it is an import makes no difference in the eyes of the law !!

3/4 size plates are not legal - I know this to my cost !!

You need to have:

Character Height 79mm

Character Width 50mm

Letter l or 1 14mm

Space between characters 11mm

Space between groups 33mm

Top, bottom and side margins 11mm

Space between vertical lines 19mm

not according to vosa when i attended an mot testers course two weeks ago.Mot testers and police check vehicles to differents regulations. And thats fact.

Half the fookin police force have no idea of the legailities of number plate sizes and regulations. They IMO should spend a bit more time looking for kids and teenagers with knives and guns than 2mm difference in a number plate size?

Been pulled in mine and nothing at all mentioned:) But when Dave got pulled in it was told to change the plate:confused: I got pulled after him too, lol.Just goes to show they can just pick on the driver at the time.

Thats what i thought!!!!

I drive past leicestershire police force head quarters every day with mine, its legal sizing on a plate in the correct font and never had any problems.
